CROOKSTON, Minn.- The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles will be sending their men's golf team to the second part of the NSIC/US Bank Men's Golf Championship. The championship meet consists of four total rounds. The first two have been played in the fall, with the remaining two coming up this weekend in Ashland, Neb. on April 11 and 12.
Quarry Oaks nor the championship itself are anything new to the Golden Eagles. They have competed in Ashland at the end of March, when they took a trip to the Quarry Oaks Collegiate meet. UMC is hoping to improve their game at this course, as they finished in the last, 12th position.
The Golden Eagles were led by
Matt McClure (Sr., Grand Rapids, Minn./Natural Resources) at the Quarry Oaks Collegiate, tying for the no. 25 rank with four other players, getting 14 strokes above par. The next-best UMC golfer was
Michael Roedl (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Management), who's par +27 placed him in 62nd position. Even though the University of Minnesota Crookston men battled, they could not catch up to the leader Minnesota State, finishing behind them by 73.
In the NSIC Championship itself, the Golden Eagles finished in the tenth position, 18 strokes behind the ninth Minot State, and 53 behind the leader Augustana College. McClure led the men's golf team in the fall as well, carding 151, score good enough for the 20th position. Roscoe showed improvements to his game, which brought him a score of 156, meaning 14 above par. Roedl tied for 46th, and
Reed Bohm (So., St. Hilaire, Minn./Golf and Turf Management) for the 50th rank.
Zach Cymbaluk tied for 48th position, however, due to his graduation in December 2014 his score will not count in UMC's total.
Although the Golden Eagles did not rank high at their fall portion of the Championship, nor at the golf course the spring portion is held at, they stay optimistic and hope to end the season on a great note.
The team is still led by McClure, whose average is at 76.8, but chased closely by Roscoe's 78.7 average. Roedl's 81.2, Bohm's 89.5 and
Timothy Jenkins' (Sr., Waukesha, Wis./Golf and Turf Management) 91.8 round up the leading five golfers for University of Minnesota Crookston.
After fourteen rounds of golf played in the fall 2014/spring 2015 season, 6 of the remaining 7 golfers will be headed to their last two rounds of NCAA DII golf in their careers.
Matt Bjorgo (Sr., Crookston, Minn./Information Technology Management), Jenkins,
Christopher Kesler (Sr., Waupaca, Wis./Golf and Turf Management), McClure, Roedl and
Roscoe will all be graduating this spring, parting their way with the program and the Head Coach
Jason Tangquist. He will have only one returning golfer, sophomore Bohm.
