Box Score 2 MINNETONKA, Minn.- The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team fell 8-0 and 12-3 to Concordia University, St. Paul Sun., March 22 at Veterans Field in Minnetonka, Minn. The Golden Eagles fall to 6-13 (0-4 NSIC). The Golden Bears improve to 6-6 (4-0 NSIC) with the two wins on Sunday.
Concordia would take a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second. David Henke started out the scoring as he put down an infield single to plate Eric Fasnacht. Alex LaPorte would then single on a bunt, Andrew Shotwell scored on an error by UMC third baseman
Thomas Kinsella (Jr., IF, North Branch, Minn./Sports and Rec
Management). The Golden Bears would load the bases with one out later in the inning. Tyler Krekling would hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Henke. Poppitz would then single through the middle to drive in LaPorte. Wahlberg would get out of any more trouble.
Kevin Woebke would have a no-hitter going through 2.2 innings but
Jesse Jennings (Sr., OF, Robbinsdale, Minn./Criminal Justice) would break it up with a bloop single to the outfield, but the Golden Eagles wouldn't be able to bring around Jennings.
Concordia would add a run in the bottom of the third as Trevon Bargfrede singled to drive in Fasnacht to make it 5-0 Golden Bears. Concordia would look to add an run later in the inning as the Golden Eagles were unable to get a double play at first but the runner tried to take home and was tagged out at the plate making it an unconvential 4-6-3-2 double play for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Bears would add a run as Dalton scored on a double play groundout to make it 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth. A triple from Fasnacht would drive in Connor Olson who reached on an error to make it 7-0.
UMC would threaten in the top of the fifth as
Kenny Perez (Jr., DH/1B, Orlando, Fla./Health Science) and
Ethan Mushitz (Fr., 2B/SS, East Grand Forks, Minn./Criminal Justice) would each reach with no outs.
However, Woebke would retire three in order to squash the threat.
The Golden Bears would be able to add their eighth run in the bottom of the fifth.
Fasnacht looked to get the cycle for Concordia in the bottom of the sixth, already having a single, double and triple but
Dalton Parks (Jr., OF, West Valley City, Utah/Sports and Rec Management) would rob Fasnacht just in front of the center field fence.
Woebke would get the game one win for the Golden Bears with the complete game shutout, giving up five hits.
Wahlberg suffered the loss after going five innings and giving up eight runs, seven of them earned, on 13 hits.
Luke Thoma (Jr., RHP, Little Falls, Minn./Natural Resources) came in and pitched an inning of solid relief, retiring the Golden Bears in order.
UMC was led on game one by Mushitz, who was 2-of-3. Fasnacht led the Golden Bears, going 3-of-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.
Trevor Buttermore (Jr., RHP, North St. Paul, Minn./Criminal Justice) got the game two start for the Golden Eagles. Buttermore would run into a Golden Bear threat in the bottom of the first but would pitch his way out of the threat.
The Golden Eagles would make a threat of their own in the top of the second but with Perez on second and Kinsella on third, UMC would be unable to get any runs home as they retired by Kody Knaus.
Connor Olson would put Concordia on the scoreboard with a three-run home run to put the Golden Bears up 3-0 in the bottom of the third.
UMC would threaten again in the top of the fourth as Kinsella and Haggstrom reached base with no outs. Perez would crush a ball but Fasnacht would make a great play on the liner and double up Kinsella at first. The Golden Eagles would be unable to do anything with the threat.
Buttermore would continue his strong pitching performance, getting the Golden Eagles out of any Concordia scoring threat going into the top of the sixth.
The Golden Eagles would get on the board in the top of the sixth as a Perez sacrifice fly drove in Parks to make it 3-1. Â
The Golden Bears would add two as Andrew Shotwell singled up the middle to drive in two runs and chase Buttermore, who would be replaced by
Alan Frank (Sr., LHP, St. Michael, Minn./Applied Studies). Bargfrede, the first batter to face Frank, would triple to right field, to drive in Shotwell. Bargfrede would score on a Frank wild pitch to make it 7-1. A double play would get the Golden Eagles out of the bottom of the sixth as Concordia scored four runs.
UMC would respond off Concordia relief pitcher Josh Lenz.
David Anaya (So., 2B/SS, Tucson, Ariz./Health Science) would hit a ground-rule double to drive in Mushitz to cut the Golden Bear lead to 7-2. Anaya would score on an error by Lenz on the throw to second to cut the lead to 7-3. The Golden Eagles would get the bases loaded late in the inning with two outs, but the Golden Bears would get out of the trouble.
The Golden Bears would add two as Shotwell drove in two off Frank in the bottom of the seventh to extend the lead to 9-3. Bargfrede would single to drive in Shotwell to make it 10-3.
Concordia would add two runs in the botton of the eighth to take the 12-3 lead. Lenz would be able to shut down UMC in the top of the ninth as the Golden Bears would hang on for the win.
Buttermore would get the loss after going 5.1 innings and giving up six earned runs on six hits. Frank would pitch 2.1 innings and give up three earned runs on eight hits while
Colt Trebesch (Jr., P/IF, Glencoe, Minn.) would give up no earned runs on one hit in 0.1 innings pitched.
Knaus got the win, going six innings and giving up one earned run on five hits, while Lenx earned the save with three innings of solid relief work.
Parks led UMC in game two, going 2-of-5 with one run scored.
The Golden Eagles will hit the road next weekend to play four against Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa. UMC already played Upper Iowa once in Clearwater, Fla., with the Peacocks winning 9-8 in a hard-fought baseball game.
