Box Score 2 ABERDEEN, S.D.– The University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball team suffered their first losses of the 2014 season falling 3-0 to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) rivals St. Cloud State University and No. 21 Northern State University at the NSU Dacotah Bank Volleyball Classic. The Golden Eagles fall to 6-2 with the losses. They are still off to one of their best starts in program history despite the two losses Saturday. UMC finished the tournament with a 2-2 mark overall.
In the first match of the day, the Golden Eagles would fall to the Huskies of St. Cloud State 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-22. UMC was led by
Brittany Looker (Sr., OH, Rochester, Minn./Health Science), who had 11 kills and hit .119 on the match.
Stephanie Pearson (Jr., OH, Frankfort, Ill./Accounting) aldo had a strong match with seven kills and nine digs. She hit .217 for the match. Setter
Sierra Trost (So., Ham Lake, Minn./Biology) had 22 assists on the match and helped the team hit .157.
Defensively,
Mary Mikutowski (Sr., Lib., Stillwater, Minn./Health Science) led the way with 16 digs, while
Kaycie Hagen (Fr., S/DS, Savage, Minn./Biology) added 11 digs.
Morgan VanGerpen (Sr., MH, Overland Park, Kan./Elementary Education) led the way with six block assists while Trost chipped in five block assists.
St. Cloud State was led by Kaitlin Doughty's 12 kills. She hit .320 for the match. Shannon Klink added 10 kills, while Macy Weller also had 10 and hit .421 for the match. Setter Erin Ohlemann finished with 39 assists.
Defensively, Brianne Stamer led the way with 25 digs. Kellan Flynn led the block with four block assists.
In the second match of the day, UMC fell to No. 21 Northern State 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-22). Looker and Pearson led the Golden Eagles with 12 kills apiece. Pearson had a double-double for the match with 12 kills and 11 digs. Trost had 33 assists on the day and helped the Golden Eagles to a .190 hitting percentage.
Defensively, Pearson led the way with her 11 digs. The UMC block struggled with just one solo block and four block assists on the match.
Northern State was led by Kelsey Chambers, who had 14 kills with a .265 hitting percentage. Tori Biach added 11 kills and hit .562, while Cari McGarvie had nine kills and hit .643. Mandy Kurosky also hit .407. The Wolves would hit an incredible .400 for the match with 52 kills and 10 errors. At setter, Drew Smith had 49 assists.
Defensively, Renee Hoffman led the way with 13 digs while Smith added 10. McGarvie and Smith each had four block assists.
Looker and Trost were named to the All-Tournament team for their performances at the NSU Dacotah Bank Volleyball Classic.
The Golden Eagles will start NSIC play against Bemidji State University Sept. 16 in Bemidji, Minn.
