Golden Eagles Fall 5-0 and 21-11 to Minnesota Duluth on Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CROOKSTON, Minn.- The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team fell 5-0 and 21-11 Sat., May 3rd in a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) tilts against University of Minnesota Duluth in frigid temperatures in early May at UMC Baseball Field in Crookston, Minn.

Bo Hellquist pitched a complete game shutout for the Bulldogs in the first game in order to get the 5-0 win. In game two, the Golden Eagles led 7-6 but Minnesota Duluth would score 15 runs in the last three innings, guided by three Minnesota Crookston errors. The second game was a sloppy one from the onset as both team's battled the cold and intermittent sleet and had nine errors amongst both teams.

In game one, Matt Korte (Sr., P/3B, St. Cloud, Minn./Accounting), one of eight seniors who were honored in between games as part of Senior Day, made his last start in a Golden Eagle uniform. Korte, the all-time innings pitched leader at UMC, went six innings, giving up five earned runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts. Korte had a solid overall performance but would suffer the loss as UMC was unable to help him out at the plate.

Hellquist pitched a gem in game one for UMD, going seven innings and giving up no earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts.

Minnesota Duluth opened the scoring in the second as Beau Goff singled up the middle to drive in Kyle Comer.

The Bulldogs would add a run in the fourth as Tommy Bodeker singled to drive in Goff.

The Golden Eagles were led by Jesse Jennings (Jr., OF, Robbinsdale, Minn./Criminal Justice), who went 2-for-3 for the game.

Minnesota Duluth was paced by Goff, who was 3-of-4 with two runs batted in (RBI's) and one run scored. Comer was 2-of-3 with one RBI and one run scored.

UMC also got good news going into the game as a pair of their seniors, injured last week, were able to play game one in Josh Brehmer (Sr., 2B/SS, Falcon Heights, Minn./Communications) and Tony Madsen (Sr., SS/2B, Mounds View, Minn./Natural Resources). Madsen, normally a right-hander, batted left in the game.

In game two, Richie Navratil (Sr., P, Blansko, Czech Republic/Sports and Rec Management) made his final start in the Maroon and Gold. Navratil would pitch well early and would be in line for the win going into the seventh after giving up six earned runs with his team owning a 7-6 lead. However, he would give up four earned runs in the seventh before being pulled. Navratil would go 6.1 innings, giving up eight earned runs on 12 hits.

None of the final 11 runs given up would be earned as Ryan Paasch (Sr., P, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sports and REc Management) and Cody Pamperin (Fr., P, Shakopee, Minn./Golf and Turf Management) came on in relief.

Max Ryan would get the win for Minnesota Duluth, pitching upwards of 130 pitches, in the complete game victory. Ryan would give up six earned runs on 13 hits.

The Golden Eagles opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first as Colton Haight (So., C, Buffalo, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) hit a sacrifice fly to plate Patrick Higgins (Fr., OF, Eagan, Minn./Criminal Justice) to make it 1-0.

Minnesota Duluth would score on a pair of UMC errors in the second as Ryan Lakin reached on an error by Korte, scoring Jimmy Heck and then Josh Denisen reached on an error by Trevor Buttermore (So., 3B, North St. Paul, Minn./Criminal Justice) allowing Goff to score.

UMC would come up with a big inning in the third to take the 5-2 advantage as Haight was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to allow Higgins to score. Jeremiah Friday (Sr., C/1B, Rush City, Minn./Natural Resources) then continued his hot hitting of late with a single through the left side to drive in Higgins. Buttermore would round out the scoring as he reached on an error by the short stop to score Travis Magdzas (Jr., OF, Duluth, Minn./Criminal Justice).

Minnesota Duluth cut into the deficit in the fourth as Denisen singled to drive in Grant Farley. Alex Wojciechowski then came up with a single to drive in Lakin to make it 5-4.

The Golden Eagles would add a run in the fifth as Marcus Campbell (So., OF/P, St. Croix Falls, Wis./Golf and Turf Management) hit a sacrifice fly to plate Friday and make it 6-4.

UMD would knot things up as Wojciechowski hit a two-run home run to make it 6-6.

The Golden Eagles would take the 7-6 lead in the sixth as Haight singled to drive home Korte.

Minnesota Duluth would add four runs in the seventh, six runs in the eighth and five in the ninth.

The Golden Eagles would cut into the UMD deficit in the bottom of the ninth but it was too little, too late. UMC's inning was led by a three-run home run by Campbell, his second of the season, to drive in Buttermore and Haight.

Minnesota Crookston was led on the game by Haight, who went 2-ofr-3 with three RBI's and two runs scored. Friday was 3-of-5 with one run scored and one RBI, while Haggstrom was 3-of-5 with one run scored.

Minnesota Duluth was paced by Wojciechowski, who was 4-of-7 with five RBI's and one run scored. Farley was 2-of-3 with three runs scored on the game.

Minnesota Crookston will conclude the 2014 season Sun., May 4 as they host the Bulldogs at 12 and 2 p.m.
