Minnesota Crookston Drops Pair of Games 9-1 to Wayne State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WAYNE, Neb. - The University of Minnesota Crookston softball team fell 9-1 in both games of a doubleheader against Wayne State College (Neb.) Sat., April 5 in Wayne, Neb. The Golden Eagles fall to 2-17 (0-6 NSIC) on the season with the pair of losses. Wayne State improves to 22-10 (8-2 NSIC) with the wins Saturday.

Paige Schaust (Sr., OF/P, Delano, Minn./Early Childhood Education) got the start in the circle for Minnesota Crookston. Schaust went 4.1 innings, allowing six earned runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts.

Wayne State got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the second. Kelcie Bormann was the first run to cross as she scored on a fielding error by Kaylin Beatty (So., UT, Andover, Minn./Equine Science) after a single by Melanie Alyea. Monique Alyea followed with a single of her own to drive in Melanie Alyea.

The Wildcats would add five runs in the third off of Schaust.

Wayne State would add two more runs off Brooke Vatthauer (Jr., P, Crookston, Minn./Health Science) in the sixth.

The Golden Eagles would get their lone run of the game in the sixth as Schaust scored on a passed ball.

Minnesota Crookston was led by Schaust, who went 1-for-3 with one run scored, while Ashley Manusos (Sr., OF, Spring Grove, Ill./Sports and Rec Management) was 1-of-3, as well.

The Wildcats were paced by Megan Hagemann, who was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Sam O'Brien was 2-for-3 with five RBI's and one run scored.

Bormann would get the win in the circle for Wayne State, who went four innings. Bormann pitched a shutout, allowing just two hits and racking up five strikeouts.

In game two, Cateline Fafard (Sr., P, Dauphin, Manitoba/Elementary Education) got the ball and would go 5.1 innings in the loss, allowing just seven earned runs on 10 hits.

Bormann would again get the win for the Wildcats after another strong pitching performance, going five innings and allowing just one earned run on two hits.

Wayne State would open up the game with five innings in the bottom of the first off Fafard. Kaiti Williams would open up the scoring with a two-run home run with one out. An Alyssa Schropp single to center field drove in Melanie Alyea and O'Brien. An Alex Schmidt single to center would drive in Schropp to make it 5-0.

The Wildcats would add just four more earned runs the rest of the game as the Golden Eagles kept Wayne State at bay.

UMC would add their lone run in the top of the second as Josee Plante (Jr., 3B, Manitou, Manitoba/Health Science) hit a solo home run to right center to leadoff the frame.

Wayne State was led by Kaiti Williams, who was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI's. In addition, Bormann was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.

The Golden Eagles were led by Plante, who was 1-for-2 with her solo shot, the second home run of the season for Plante, and one RBI and Shelby Hollinger (Jr., 2B, Neudorf, Saskatchewan/Health Science), who was 1-for-2, as well.

Minnesota Crookston will head to Sioux Falls, S.D. to face Augustana College (S.D.) at 12 and 2 p.m. as they look to get their first conference victories. Augustana is currently ranked No. 13 in the nation.
