Big Early Innings Propel Wildcats to Sweep of Minnesota Crookston in NSIC Softball Action

Wayne, Neb. -- Wayne State College used big early innings on Saturday afternoon to sweep Minnesota Crookston in NSIC softball action.

Minnesota Crookston falls to 8-23.

Game One

The first game would see both teams go scoreless in the first inning, but WSC would strike for eight runs in the second inning, all with two outs.

WSC would score three more runs in the middle innings and take an 11-0 lead heading into the fifth inning.

The Golden Eagles would load the bases with zero out in the fifth, but would score just one run on a wild pitch, scoring Riley Blake (So., P/OF, Las Vegas, Nev.).

The Wildcats would get the final out to run rule the Golden Eagles.

Minnesota Crookston had just two hits in the game, one apiece from Jocelyn Hernandez (So., OF, Tracy, Calif.) and Chayse Doering (So., OF, Shakopee, Minn.). Minnesota Crookston left seven runners on base.

Charlotte Dombrowski (Sr., P, Valparaiso, Ind.) struggled in the circle, giving up eight earned runs in 1.2 innings of work.

Game Two

In game two, it would be a similar story. 

Neither team would score in the first inning, but WSC would strike for two in the second.

The Wildcats would get a run each in the fourth and fifth and two in the sixth to take a 6-0 lead heading into the top of the seventh.

Blake would single to the catcher and Madisen Yandle (So., IF, Lakeville, Minn.) would score on a throwing error to cut the lead to five.

The Golden Eagles would load the bases in the seventh, but would strike out swinging for the final two outs, falling by five.

Blake, Emily Kalina (Fr., OF, Rice Lake, Wis.), Valerie VanZant (Fr., MIF, Salina, Kan.) and Rayna French (Sr., C, La Salle, Manitoba) combined for the four hits in the game for the Golden Eagles. The Golden Eagles left 10 runners on base.

Hannah Trzinski (So., P/1B, Stevens Point, Wis.) went the distance and gave up six earned runs on seven hits, striking out one.

What's Next

Minnesota Crookston is back in action tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader with Augustana starting at noon.
