Mustangs Take Pitcher’s Dual 3-0 in Game One; SMSU Bats Ignite in Game Two as Golden Eagles Fall 10-2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team fell 3-0 and 10-2 to Southwest Minnesota State University to conclude a four-game series Sat., April 26 at UMC Baseball Field in Crookston, Minn. The Golden Eagles got strong pitching from Trevor Buttermore (Fr., P/3B, North St. Paul, Minn./Criminal Justice) in game one, but were unable to match bats with the Mustangs. In game two, the Golden Eagles struggled on the mound as SMSU got 10 runs on 11 hits to pick up the 10-2 win.

The Golden Eagles fall to 1-41 (0-30 NSIC) with Saturday's pair of losses. They are still seeking their first conference victory. Southwest Minnesota State improves to 21-20 (12-13 NSIC) with the victories.

Buttermore put up one of his strongest performances of the season in game one, going 6.1 innings and giving up just two earned runs on seven hits. Buttermore gave up no runs on three hits in his gem of an outing.

However on this day, Jimmy Callahan had the better outing for Southwest Minnesota State, as Callahan won the pitcher's dual against Buttermore. Callahan pitched the complete game shutout, giving up just three hits with seven strikeouts on the game.

The first run would not score until the sixth inning when Sam Haas tripled down the right field line to plate Jason Minett. The Mustangs would add one more run in the inning as Tanner Neale singled to drive in Haas.

SMSU would add a run in the seventh to protect their lead as Jon Ellis singled to drive in Pat Rients.

The Mustangs were led on the game by Haas, who was 1-of-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Minett was also 1-of-3 with one run scored.

UMC had hits on game one from Ryan Haggstrom (So., C/1B/P, Apple Valley, Minn./Accounting), Travis Magdzas (Jr., OF, Duluth, Minn./Criminal Justice) and Colton Haight (So., C, Buffalo, Minn./Sports and Rec Management).

In game two, the Golden Eagles used four pitchers to get through the game. Thane Larson (Sr., P, Grantsburg, Wis./Natural Resources) got the start and would suffer the loss after going two innings and giving up two earned runs on three hits. Ryan Paasch (Sr., P, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) would pitch strong giving up no runs on two hits. Jon Mittag (Sr., P, Glenville, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) would go two innings and give up four earned runs on five hits.

Perhaps UMC's strongest pitching of the day came from Marcus Campbell (So., P/OF, St. Croix Falls, Wis./Golf and Turf Management), who made just his second appearance on the mound. Campbell went three innings, giving up no runs on one hit.

The win for Southwest Minnesota State went to Steven Wehr, who pitched seven innings, giving up one earned run on six hits.

The Mustangs would be led by Rients in game two, who was 2-of-4 with three RBI's and two runs scored. In addition, Engels was 2-of-5 with one run scored and one RBI.

The Golden Eagles looked to Josh Brehmer (Sr., 2B/SS, Roseville, Minn./Communications), who was 2-of-5 with one RBI, and Haggstrom, who was 2-of-4 with one run scored.

Minnesota Crookston will next take the field Wed., April 30 as they take to the road for the last time this season against Minot State University at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. in Minot, N.D.
