Golden Eagles Fall 11-3 and 8-1 to Minot State in Pair of Home Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CROOKSTON, Minn.- The University of Minnesota Crookston softball team fell 11-3 and 8-1 to Minot State University Tues., April 22 at UMC Softball Field in Crookston, Minn. The games were the first home games for the Golden Eagles in 74 games as UMC last played at home April 17, 2012, which was 736 days ago.

It was a beautiful day for softball in Northwest Minnesota, as temperatures hovered in the high 50's and low 60's Tuesday afternoon. With Tuesday's losses, UMC falls to 3-30 (1-19 NSIC). Minot State improves to 27-14 (15-5 NSIC) with the pair of victories over the Golden Eagles.

Bailey Braatz (Fr., P/1B, Buffalo, Minn./Communications) got the start for UMC in game one. Braatz went three innings, giving up six runs, none of them earned, on four hits. Braatz was pulled because of an injury in the fourth. Brooke Vatthauer (Jr., P/1B, Crookston, Minn./Health Science) came on for UMC and went two innings, giving up five earned runs on seven hits.

The win for Minot State went to Alyssa Cornejo, who pitched four innings of shutout softball, giving up just three hits.

Minot State scored six runs in the second inning led by a grand slam from Stacy Fournier. All the runs in the second were unearned including the home run, after an error earlier in the inning.

The Beavers would add five runs in the fifth guided by a two-run home run from Melissa Bell.

The Golden Eagles would plate three runs in the fifth starting with an Ashley Manusos (Sr., OF, Spring Grove, Ill./Sports and Rec Management) single to score Allison Foley (So., SS, Lockport, Ill./Accounting). Shelby Hollinger (Jr., 2B, Neudorf, Saskatchewan/Health Science) would score on an error by the catcher. Alexis Khoshaba (So., OF, Richmond, British Columbia/Sports and Rec Management) would drive in the final run of the inning with a double to score Josee Plante (Jr., 3B, Manitou, Manitoba/Health Science).

Fournier led the Beavers, going 2-of-2 with five RBI's one one run scored. In addition, Bell went 2-for-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored.

Manusos went 2-of-3 with one RBI to lead the Golden Eagles in game one.

In the second game, Paige Schaust (Sr., OF/P, Delano, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) got the start and would go a complete seven innings, allowing eight earned runs on 15 hits.

Minot State was guided by Mindy Lorimor, who got her 20th win of the year, going seven innings and giving up one run on six hits.

Minot State's cause was led by early home runs from Bell and Katie Backes.

The Golden Eagles lone run of the second game, came across on a Plante double to score pinch-runner Sammy Knudson (Fr., OF/P, Fergus Falls, Minn./Undecided). Knudson came on after an injury to Manusos, as she was headed into first base on a fielder's choice. Manusos was carted off due her injury, where the Minot State team showed great sportsmanship shaking hands with Manusos and sharing well wishes.

UMC was led in game two by Foley, who was 2-of-3.

The Golden Eagles will conclude the season with games Saturday and Sunday against Upper Iowa University and Winona State University.
