Golden Eagles Drop Doubleheader to Sioux Falls 10-3 and 9-4

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -  The University of Minnesota Crookston softball team fell 10-3 and 9-4 to University of Sioux Falls Fri., April 12 at Sherman Park in Sioux Falls, S.D. Sioux Falls controlled game one from the first pitch but game two would be a little more in doubt. The two teams would be knotted up at 2-2 going into the sixth inning, but a six-run frame would lead the Cougars past UMC 9-4.

The Golden Eagles drop to 3-22 (1-11 NSIC) after the doubleheader loss. Sioux Falls improves to 24-8 (12-4 NSIC) after their pair of wins.

Cateline Fafard (Sr., P/UT, Dauphin, Manitoba/Elementary Education) and would go 2.2 innings and give up five earned runs as she suffered the game one loss. Brooke Vatthauer (Jr., P/1B, Crookston, Minn./Health Science) came on and pitched strong in relief, going 4.1 innings and giving up three earned runs on seven hits.

The game one win for Sioux Falls went to Amanda Walters, who pitched a complete game, giving up two earned runs on five hits with 11 strikeouts.

Sioux Falls would get the scoring started with a run in the first as Shannon Daly scored on a wild pitch. The Cougars would add to their lead with a four-run second led by a Taylor Jonas three-run home run off Fafard.

USF would add two more runs in the third to make it 7-0. The Golden Eagles would break into the scoring in the bottom of the third when Fafard scored on an error by the pitcher.
 
Sioux Falls would add two runs in the fourth to extend their lead to 9-1. The Golden Eagles would counter with two runs of their own as Alexis Khoshaba (So., OF, Richmond, British Columbia/Sports and Rec Management) hit a two-run home run to drive in Ashley Manusos (Sr., OF, Spring Grove, Ill./Sports and Rec Management).

USF would add one more run in the top of the seventh to round out the scoring, making a final tally of 10-3.

Sioux Falls was led in the game by Daly, who was 3-of-4 with two runs batted in (RBI's) and run scored. Jonas was 2-of-3 with four RBI's and one run scored.

The Golden Eagles looked to Allison Foley (So., SS, Lockport, Ill./Accounting) is game one. She was 2-of-3 in the leadoff spot for Minnesota Crookston.



Paige Schaust (Sr., OF/P, Delano, Minn./Early Childhood Education) would get the ball in game one and would pitch well early for the Golden Eagles. Schaust would allow just two runs on five hits in her first five innings in the circle. However, the Cougars would get to Schaust in the sixth with six runs on four hits. She would suffer the loss in game two.

Bailey Bouman would get the game two win for the Cougars, pitching a complete game and giving up four earned runs on 10 hits.

Sioux Falls got the scoring started in the top of the first as Daly hit a two-run home run to drive in Erin Scott.

The Golden Eagles would counter with a big inning of their own. The Golden Eagles would get two on to lead off the inning. After a Bouman strike out of Manusos, Josee Plante (Jr., 3B, Manitou, Manitoba/Health Science) would single to score Foley to make it 2-1. Shelby Hollinger (Jr., 2B, Neudorf, Saskatchewan/Health Science) would then cross the plate on a wild pitch from Bouman. After a walk of Schaust and a single from Khoshaba, the Golden Eagles would have the bases juiced with two outs but would be unable to capitalize on the situation, only coming up with the two runs.

Both pitchers would calm down over the next four innings and neither team would plate a run, leaving the score at 2-2. However, six runs would cross in the sixth for Sioux Falls aided by two UMC errors in the inning.

The Golden Eagles would add a run in the sixth as Khoshaba hit her second home run of the day to cut the lead to 8-3. UMC would add one more run in the seventh as Plante singled to plate Hollinger.

Minnesota Crookston was led in game two by Foley, who was 2-of-4 with one run scored, and Plante, who was 2-for-4 with two RBI's, Khoshaba was 2-of-3 with one RBI and one run scored.

USF's Daly continued a very productive day, going 3-of-4 with four RBI's and one run scored.

The Golden Eagles are slated to play Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minn. at 12 and 2 p.m. Sat., April 12.
