Box Score 2 SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston struggled to get their bats going Sunday as they fell 14-0 and 13-1 to Augustana College (S.D.) at Karras Parkas Home of Ronken Field in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Golden Eagles were one-hit in game one against the Vikings and had five hits in the second game Sunday. The Golden Eagles remain winless on the season as they drop to 0-31 (0-18 NSIC) on the season. Augustana improves to 26-16 (14-6 NSIC) on the year as they sweep the series against the Golden Eagles.
Augustana pitchers Tyson Gau, Grant Larson and Derek Quame combined to give up just one hit in game one of the series. Gau would get the win for the Vikings as he went four innings in his start, giving up no runs and no hits.
Matt Korte (Jr., P/IF/OF, St. Cloud, Minn.) got the ball for the Golden Eagles. Korte would go three innings, giving up seven runs, six of them earned, giving up nine hits as he was handed the loss.
Augustana would get on the scoreboard in the top of the first. Tony Viger would get things started for the Vikings as he singled to center field to drive in Jake Petersen. Viger would advance to third on an error by UMC center fielder
J.C. Crane (Sr., C/OF/P, Tucson, Ariz.). Viger would come across the plate on an Alex Fink ground out.
The Vikings would add two more runs in the top of the second. Petersen would drive in the third and fourth runs of the game with a single to right field, scoring Zach Dibble and Nate Hewes. Marcus O'Neill would then single to center field to bring Petersen across the plate.
Two more runs would be scored off of Korte in the top of the third as Hewes doubled to left center to score Kyle Winter and Jack Goihl to make it 7-0.
Trevor Buttermore (Fr., P, North St. Paul, Minn.) would come on in relief of Korte in the top of the fourth. Buttermore would mow down the Vikings in order in the inning.
Augustana would score four runs in the top of the fifth off Buttermore. Hewes started the scoring as he singled to short stop to score Fink. With the bases loaded, Buttermore would hit Dibble, bringing the ninth run of the game across. With the bases still loaded, Petersen would be walked to bring another run across. The 11th run of the game would score on an O'Neill sacrifice fly to score Brian Duxbury.
Buttermore would again shut down the Vikings in the sixth inning but the Vikings would get to him again in the seventh.Petersen doubled to left center with no out to bring Duxbury home. In the next at-bat O'Neill grounded out to second base to plate Ryan Burmeister. Viger would then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Petersen.
UMC's one hit on the game would come from senior first baseman
Jordan Prill (Melrose, Minn.) off of Augustana relief pitcher Quame.
Jon Mittag (Jr., P, Glenville, Minn.) would get the start in game two for the Golden Eagles. Mittag would give up five runs in the first five innings but Augustana would get to him more so in the sixth inning as they would score five more runs off Mittag in the sixth. Mittag suffered the loss in game two.
Augustana would get out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. O'Neill started out the scoring with a triple to left field and would score on a throwing error by UMC left fielder
Jesse Jennings (So., Robbinsdale, Minn.). A second run would score for the Vikings as Fink singled up the middle to plate Viger.
The Golden Eagles would cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the third.
Tony Madsen (Jr., IF, Mounds View, Minn.) started out the inning with an infield single.
Josh Brehmer (Jr., 2B/SS, Roseville, Minn.) would then hit an infield single of his own to move Madsen over.
Ryan Haggstrom (Fr., P/UT, Apple Valley, Minn.) would come up in the clutch with a single to center field to score Madsen.
Mittag would keep the Vikings at bay in the second and third innings. Augustana would add their third run of the game in the top of the fourth as Hewes grounded out to score Goihl, who had doubled to lead off the inning.
In the fifth, two more runs would cross for Augie as Fink hit a two-out single to score Petersen and Dibble to make it 5-1.
Augustana scored six runs in the sixth inning. Ludwigson started out the scoring with a double to score Winter and Goihl. Dibble would then single to left field to score Hewes. Ludwigson would come across the plate on a passed ball. With no outs, Mittag would be pulled in favor of
Richie Navratil (So., P, Blansko, Czech Republic).
With Navratil now pitching, Dibble would score on a wild pitch to make it 10-1. A Viger single to center field with still just one out to score O'Neill. With still only one out, Goihl would single to score Troy Pilkington.
Marcus Campbell (Fr., P, St. Croix Falls, Wis.) would come on to pitch in the top of the seventh for his first appearance in the Maroon and Gold. Campbell has missed the majority of the season after suffering an injury. He is in his first year at UMC after playing football at University of Wisconsin-River Falls last season.
One run would come across off Campbell in the inning as he would walk Eric Docken with the bases loaded to make it 13-1. However, Campbell pitch his way out of the bases loaded situation to just give up that run.
Bennett Johnson would get the win for Augustana in game one after pitching five innings, allowing just one run on five hits.
The Golden Eagle bats were paced by Brehmer, who was 3-for-3 for the game. Haggstrom and Madsen also had hits for UMC in the game.
UMC is scheduled to play Bemidji State University April 24 at 4 and 6 p.m. Information on when and where those games will be played depending on weather and field conditions will be announced as soon as possible when the information is available.
