Golden Eagles Fall to U-Mary 8-1, 13-4 in Doubleheader at Metrodome

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota, Crookston baseball team fell at the hands of the University of Mary 8-1, 13-4 in a doubleheader at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. The Golden Eagle bats combined for 15 hits in the two games, improving on their performance from a day prior against Upper Iowa. The UMC pitching staff had a rocky doubleheader at times, giving up 22 runs on 22 hits on the game but showed some promise at others. UMC falls to 0-4 on the season while U-Mary improved to 2-0 on the year as Saturday's games were the first of the season for the Marauders.

Junior college transfer Jon Mittag (Jr., Glenville, Minn.) got the start on the bump in game one for UMC and went four innings while giving up five earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts.

The Golden Eagle bats were led in game one by J.C. Crane (Sr., C/OF, Tucson, Ariz.), who went 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored UMC also had hits in the game from Matt Korte (Jr., P/IF/OF, St. Cloud, Minn.) , Jordan Prill (Sr., 1B/OF/P, Melrose, Minn.), Colton Haight (C/1B/OF, Rogers, Minn.), Kameron Crandall (R-Fr., P/IF/OF, Zimmerman, Minn.) and Tony Madsen (Jr., IF, Mounds View, Minn.).

U-Mary started the scoring in game one in the bottom of the first as a Michael Stevenson single drove in James Carroll and Cory Herback to make it 2-0.

The Golden Eagles cut into the Marauder advantage in the top of the second to make it U-Mary 2, UMC 1 when a Crandall single brought home Crane, who had doubled to left field.

In the bottom the second, Austin Grunstad tripled and was brought home on a sacrifice fly from Alex Deyle.

The Marauders extended their game one lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the third inning. Sam Ingemansen started off the scoring in the inning as he doubled through the left side to plate James Carroll and Jason Shaul. Derek Somerville also scored on the play on a throwing error that allowed him to advance from second to home plate.

The Golden Eagle pitchers were able to shut down the Marauders in the fourth and fifth inning with Mittag pitching the fourth and Brooks Miller (So., P/IF/OF, Moorhead, Minn.) coming in to relieve him in the fifth frame. Miller would come in and pitch two innings, giving up two hits and two earned runs.

The Marauders added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-1, which would end up being the final score. Marice Burrough began the scoring for the inning as he hit a single to drive in Somerville.  Herback finished off the scoring with a single down the leftfield line to plate Grunstad.

Mittag was credited with the loss on the game for the Golden Eagles while the Marauders' Shane Trattles got the win after going the whole game, giving up seven hits, one earned run and striking out three batters.

In game two, freshman Trevor Buttermore (Fr., P, North St. Paul, Minn.) got the start for the Golden Eagles. Buttermore would go one-and-two-thirds innings giving up five earned runs on five hits.

The Marauders would start of the scoring in the top of the first as Stevenson singled to center field to plate Shaul. UMC answered in their half of the first as they strung together some hits. Josh Brehmer (Jr., 2B/SS, Roseville, Minn.) would drive in the run as he singled up the middle to score Korte.

U-Mary would come up big in the second inning as they got to Buttermore, getting four runs off four hits. The Marauder onslaught commenced as Deyle doubled down the right field line to plate Kyal Williams. Burrough continued the scoring as he doubled to right field to plate Grundstad and Deyle. Herback made the score 4-1 as he hit sac fly to center to score Burrough.

The Golden Eagles again responded in their half of the second as Ryan Haggstrom led off the inning with a triple to left center. Miller plated Haggstrom with a double to right center to make it 5-2. They added another run as Korte hit a sac fly to center field to drive in Miller.

With Thane Larson (Jr., P, Grantsburg, Wis.) now on the mound for the Golden Eagles, U-Mary would add a run as Grunstad singled up the middle to score Williams.

The Marauders would extend their advantage to 9-3 in the fourth beginning with a Somerville single to right field which scored Carroll. Williams hit an RBI single to plate Stevenson to further the Marauder cause and then Grunstad hit a sac fly to score Somerville.

Prill came on in relief of Larson in the fifth after Larson went two-and-a-third innings on the bump. Larson would allow four runs on six hits.

In the fifth, U-Mary's scoring opened as Carroll scored on a Prill wild pitch. A Somerville single through the right side plated Stevenson to make the score 11-1 at the conclusion of the fifth inning.

Prill opened the sixth inning on the mound, as well. The Marauders opened the inning's scoring as Burrough grounded out to second, allowing Grundstad to score. Prill was replaced by Kyle Kleven (So., P, Larimore, N.D.) after that play. Prill would go one-and-a-third giving up three earned runs on three hits. U-Mary would add one more run to Prill's tally as Herback singled to center field to score Deyle. Kleven would go one-and-two-thirds innings, giving two hits and no runs.

The Golden Eagles didn't give up late in the game as they were able to get to relief pitcher Mason Schiff in the seventh inning with Jeremiah Friday hitting a double to right field to score Haight, who had doubled, as well.

Jeff Skadeland picked up the win for U-Mary in game two as he went five innings giving up three earned runs and five hits. Buttermore got the game two loss.

The UMC bats were led in game two by Korte, who went 2-fo-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Miller was 2-for-3 on the game with an RBI and a one scored while Brehmer, Haight, Friday and Haggstrom also had hits.

The Golden Eagles will return to the Metrodome Tuesday to face Valley City State University at 7:30 p.m.
