Golden Eagle Women’s Tennis Squad Set to Open 2012 Season

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Tennis team is set to open the 2012 season with a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) match against Upper Iowa University on Friday, February 3. The match will take place at Gold's Gym in Sartell, Minn. and start at 6 p.m.

The Golden Eagles come off a 2011 season that saw them finish 4-11 overall and 1-10 in the NSIC. U of M, Crookston Head Coach Josh Lunak enters his fifth season with great optimism as his squad returns everyone from last season. Amanda Pihlaja (So, Duluth, Minn.) went 7-7 in singles last season. Holly Roepke (Jr, Osage, Minn.) went 6-9 while Alyssa Klingenberg (Jr, Park Rapids, Minn.) went 4-6. Roepke also went 6-8 on the doubles side.

“We are returning all seven of our players from last year and are very excited about the upcoming year,” says Coach Lunak. “Last year we had a record number of team wins and we are going to build off that momentum. The team has been working extremely hard during practice is very excited about our first match. Upper Iowa University will be a tough test against one of the top teams in the conference. This will be a good indicator of where we are at.”

The Peacocks went 2-1 during their fall matches. They finished last season with a 13-8 overall record while going 10-1 in the NSIC. Amanda Nunez went 24-5 in singles while Anastasia Dabiza went 22-5. The Peacocks had four players reach the 20 win mark in doubles including Dabiza (20-7), Nunez (20-9), Courtney Romer (20-7) and Karli Loewecke (20-9).
