Blaine, Minn. - The Golden Eagles have officially fallen short in their pursuit of the Carla Berg Cup as they fall 4-3 to the University of Minnesota. In the net for the Golden Eagles tonight was Adam Goody (Jr., G, Airdrie, Alberta) who had an 18 save shutout win in the Golden Eagles quarterfinal game last night. For the Golden Gophers, it was Owen Peterson, who was in net for their win over Minnesota State University, Mankato in the quarterfinals.
The first period really set the tone for what this game would become, with both teams playing physical, tightly defended hockey. But it was the Golden Gophers that opened the scoring when Tyler Bishop found the back of the net on the powerplay with 9:41 left on the clock. The Golden Gophers held that lead for a while, but Alexander Bailey (5th, D, Crosby, N.D.) brought things back even with a goal off of a rebound coughed up by Peterson. His goal was assisted by Aiden Morelli (Sr., F, Minot, N.D.) and Logan Syrup (5th, F, Park River, N.D.) and the period came to an end at 1-1.
The Golden Eagles seemingly took over the game in the second period, dominating physically and possessing the puck well. Eventually, that style of play rewarded them when Ben Hines (Jr., F, Detroit Lakes, Minn.) jumped onto the ice, got a partial breakaway and found twine with a beautiful shot that Peterson never had a chance on. Jackson Dodds (5th, F, Watford City, N.D.) had the lone assist. Three minutes later, Anthony Foster (Jr., F, Warroad, Minn.) put the puck in the net due to a perfect bounce off of a Golden Gopher defender's skate. Fox Dodds (5th, F, Watford City, N.D.) and Alexander Bailey collected the assists. The Golden Eagles carried the 3-1 lead, and momentum, into intermission.
Unfortunately, the third period is one to forget if you are a member of the Golden Eagles. Things were going well for a good portion of the third, but that changed in an instant. With 7:31 to go in the third, the Golden Gophers saw the momentum up for grabs and grabbed it when Keegan Johnson found the back of the net. With 5:55 on the clock, Tyler Arneson brought things back to where the game started, a tie. But, with just 4:03 remaining in the game, Luke Myers got a good shot off that made its way to the back of the net. The Golden Gophers, with three goals in three and a half minutes, took the lead and never let it go. The Golden Eagles fell 4-3.
The Golden Eagles will play for third place in the WCCHA tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. against the University of Wisconsin.
