Minnesota Crookston

  • POTW. What a weekend it was for freshman star Spencer Swenson. The first year Golden Eagle averaged 28 points per game and 10 rebounds per game in two wins over Minot State and UMary, including a career-high 31 points and 13 rebounds, which tied a career best, against the Marauders. Swenson is the first Golden Eagle freshman ever to have five straight 20 point games and is the first player and first freshman ever since Harrison Cleary to win a weekly conference honor as a Golden Eagle.
  • GIVE HIM HIS FLOWERS. Local standout Owen Chervestad maybe wasn't expected to play a ton this season, but due to some unforeseen circumstances, the former Red Lake County Rebel has started in five straight games and has ran point effectively in those starts. In the win over the Marauders, Chervestad finished with four points, three rebounds and four assists, tying a career high. Owen has played 30 minutes or more in three straight games.
  • JUNKYARD DOG. Boy, was J.D. Roberts ever outstanding against Minot State. Through his first 18 or so minutes played, Roberts didn't score a point. That changed when the Golden Eagles needed it. The Golden Eagles saw the Division I transfer score seven straight points down the stretch, including a massive and-1 late in the game to help the Golden Eagles get the win. The Golden Eagles relied on Roberts to make big plays and he answered the bell.
  • DANGEROUS TEAM. It's a bummer that the Golden Eagles are eliminated from playoff contention, because they are a team that not a ton of teams would like to see. The Golden Eagles are playing their best ball of the season, which started when they put a massive scare into the NSIC regular season champions, St. Cloud State, falling by two. In those five games including that loss to the Huskies, the Golden Eagles are 2-3, with three of their losses being by an average of just 5.5 points.

Minnesota Duluth
  • The Bulldogs will enter Crookston playing really good basketball, winning three of their last four games, including a 35 point win over Jamestown just last week.
  • QUITE THE QUAD. UMD will rely on four guys for a majority of their offense. Cole Hanson, Caleb Siwek, Noah Paulson and Jackson Fowlkes all average in double-figures and combine for about 51 points per game on a team that averages 77.
  • SCORCHING. In their win over the Golden Eagles in very early December, Minnesota Duluth quite frankly couldn't miss. They made just six threes on 18 attempts against the Golden Eagles, but they made 36 field goals on an unreal 56 percent from the field, both of which were season highs.
