WINONA, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston tennis team edged Winona State University 4-3 Friday, February 13 in Winona. The Golden Eagles improved to 3-2 (1-0 NSIC) as they picked up an important road win, and their first conference victory. Winona State dropped to 1-1 (0-1 NSIC) with the loss.
The Golden Eagles got off on good footing early, earning the ever important doubles point. At the No. 2 slot, Asli Oktay (So., Istanbul, Turkey) and Ariadna Solis Guals (Jr., Santpedor, Spain) defeated Clara Thoemke and Izzy Barr, 6-2. Oktay and Solis Guals are 2-0 at No. 2 doubles. At the No. 3 spot, Kavya Singh (Sr., Agra, India) and Nadia Cases Mundet (Jr., Barcelona, Spain) upended Debra Ogdahl and Nikita Agrawal, 6-4. Singh and Cases Mundet improved to 2-0 at the No. 3 doubles position. At No. 1 doubles, Daniela de Lucas Rivera (Jr., Madrid, Spain) and Abril Manas Hernandez (So., Barcelona, Spain) fell 6-2 to Ally Berger and Lainy Ristau. They are 0-1 in their debut as a pairing.
In singles, Minnesota Crookston was lifted by a No. 3 singles win by Cases Mundet, defeating Burr, 6-2, 6-3, to improve to an unblemished 4-0 this season. At No. 5 singles, Manas Hernandez moved to 2-1 overall, picking up her first win at the No. 5 slot with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Burger. Singh controlled the match over Kate Velander, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6, improving to 3-0 overall. At No. 1 singles, de Lucas Rivera fell in three, 6-2, 2-6, 2-6 to Ristau, dropping to 1-3. At the No. 2 spot, Oktay fell 6-4, 6-2 to Thoemke to drop to 2-1 with her first loss of the season. At No. 5 singles, Solis Guals fell by default to Arawal.
Minnesota Crookston takes on Minnesota State University in Winona, Minn., Saturday, February 1 at 1 p.m.
