Brookings, S.D. - Golden Eagle Hockey has had its first loss of the 2026-27 season, following a hard fought 3-1 loss to the South Dakota State University Jackrabbits. Adam Goody (Sr., G, Airdrie Alberta) got the start for the Golden Eagles, he entered the night with a 2-0-0 record, a .896 save percentage, and a 3.00 goals against average. For the Jackrabbits, it was Trent Nelson.
The first period was largely even, except for where it mattered the most. The Jackrabbits came out of the first period leading 2-0. The first goal did not take long for them either, with Trent Anfison scoring just 4:28 into the opening period on the powerplay. Two and a half minutes later, Breck Hirrschoff extended the Jackrabbits' lead to 2-0. Goody and Nelson locked it down for the remainder of the first period, with Goody saving five of the seven shots he faced and Nelson saving all nine that he faced.
The second period was a little more even, with each team coming away with a goal. The Jackrabbits struck first in the second period, however, with Preston Karelitz giving his team a 3-0 lead 8:38 into the middle 20. The Golden Eagles did respond to this goal with 2:50 left. It was Ben Hines (Sr., F, Detroit Lakes, Minn.) scoring his third goal of the season that broke the Trent Nelson shutout. Braydon Caron (Fr., F, Mayville, N.D.) and Teagen Lubinski (Fr., D, Crookston, Minn.) had the assists on the lone Golden Eagles goal of the night. That assist was the first point of the career of Teagan Lubinski.
The third period was all goaltending. Both netminders stood on their heads, with Adam Goody keeping the players in front of him in the game and Trent Nelson keeping his team ahead. For Nelson, he stopped all 12 shots he faced in the game's final period, ending his night with 28 saves on 29 shots. As for Golden Eagles netminder Adam Goody, he stopped all 16 shots that he faced in the third period, ending his night with 33 saves on 36 shots against.
While a loss is never a good thing, it is a very young season and the Golden Eagles are still 4-1-0 through their first five games. Their only loss comes to a team that only had one loss on the season, which came in overtime. The Golden Eagles have a lot more hockey to play, and will have an opportunity to bounce back tomorrow morning when they hit the ice for game two of the weekend series at 10:30 a.m.
