Crookston, Minn. - The Golden Eagles and University of Jamestown are back for day two of the season series following the 9-1 Golden Eagles win in game one. In net for the Golden Eagles was #35 Tyler Swanson (So., G, Moorhead, Minn.) with a 7-1-0 record, a 1.38 goals against average, and a .945 save percentage. The Jimmies went with Tyler Stephano, who had a 1-0-0 record, a 6.43 goals against average, and a .842 save percentage. The Golden Eagles put on another stellar performance, winning 8-3.
The Golden Eagles had another quick start, with Braden Van de Kraats (So., F, Medicine Hat, Alberta) putting the Golden Eagles up 1-0 early. Ben Hines (Jr., F, Detroit Lakes, Minn.) had the only assist. Less than two minutes later, Van de Kraats had his second of the afternoon. Logan Syrup (5th, F, Park River, N.D.) and Tyler Lorenz (So., D, Shakopee, Minn.) had the assists. 17 seconds after that goal, Mason Romfo (So., F, Langdon, N.D.) put the Golden Eagles ahead 3-0 with his second goal of the weekend. Tyler Lorenz and Kadin Edwards (Fr., F, Crookston, Minn.) tallied assists. A minute following, Aidan McPhee flicked a shot on the net, beating Stephano for the 4-0 lead. Fox Dodds (5th, F, Watford City, N.D.) and Alexander Bailey (5th, D/F, Crosby, N.D.) assisted on the goal, and the Golden Eagles chased Stephano from the net. The Jimmies turned the net to Ethan Haglund, who comes in with a 5-1-2 record, a 3.30 goals against average, and a .918 save percentage. The Jimmies responded quickly, with Cooper Malkowski firing one past Swanson. The first period would fly by after that, but there was one last goal to be scored. With 44 seconds on the clock, Anthony Foster (Jr., F, Warroad, Minn.) scored to make it a 5-1 game. Mason Romfo and Riley Benson (Fr., D, Mentor, Minn.) had the assists.
The second period was a much more even period for the first 15 minutes, with the total shots in the period favoring the Jimmies 15-8. 15:21 into the middle frame, Jaxon Hill beat Tyler Swanson to bring the Jimmies within three. Two minutes later, Brooks Roalsdon made it a 5-3 game, and the Jimmies were surging. The Golden Eagles were able to weather the storm for the final few minutes of the game, carrying their 5-3 lead into the third period.
The third period shifted back into the Golden Eagles' favor, with Fox Dodds making it a 6-3 game five minutes in. Dalston Kelly (Jr., F, Minto, N.D.) and Brody Nordmark (Fr., D, Souris, N.D.) assisted on the goal. The Golden Eagles had a lot of strong individual performances in this game, but it was Tyler Lorenz who took over in the third. 12 minutes in, Lorenz blasted a shot past Haglund on the powerplay, with Alexander Bailey and Brody Nordmark assisting. Six minutes later, Lorenz scored again to ensure there would not be a Jimmies comeback. Mason Romfo and Anthony Foster tallied the assists on the team's eighth goal. The Golden Eagles came away with an 8-3 win, and swept the Jimmies.Â
The Golden Eagles had one of their best weekends of the season, outscoring the #1 seed in the WCCHA 17-4. Swanson made 33 saves on 36 shots against, as he continues to have a fantastic season. The Golden Eagles now head on the road for potentially their most difficult weekend of the season. They will head to Minneapolis to play the University of Minnesota, who is currently ranked #3 in the Central Region. Puck drop on Friday is set for 7:30 p.m. at Ridder Arena. Saturday's puck drop will be at 3:45 p.m. also at Ridder Arena.
