Moorhead, Minn. - The Golden Eagles season has come to an end following two losses to the hands of Minnesota State University, Moorhead. The first game was a 9-4 loss that saw the Golden Eagles attempt a comeback in the sixth inning. The second game was much closer, with the Golden Eagles carrying a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth before falling 4-2.
Game one saw two runs from the Dragons in the third inning, and two more in the fourth. Haley Koch (Sr., C, Mondamin, Iowa) started a comeback attempt in the top of the sixth with a home run to left field, which brought home Irelyn Spencer (R-So., IF, Rapid City, S.D.) and Rayna French (So., C, La Salle, Manitoba) to bring the Golden Eagles within one. The bottom of the sixth was the heartbreaker, as the Dragons brought in five runners to bring the score to 9-3. Whitnee Curry (Sr., MIF/OF, Lincoln, Neb.) singled through the right side to bring home Jocelyn Hernandez (Fr., OF, Tracy, Calif.), but it was too late.
Game two was better showing, but not quite enough. It started with Avery Steffen stealing home for the Dragons in the first inning to give the Dragons an early lead. That 1-0 lasted all the way till the top of the sixth inning, where the Golden Eagles captured their first lead of the series. Hannah Trzinski (Fr., P, Steven Points, Wis.) hit a double to right center to earn two RBIs. Charlotte Dombrowski (Jr., P/OF, Valparaiso, Ind.) and Whitnee Curry came home to give the Golden Eagles the 2-1 lead. But, it was the bottom of the sixth that gave the Golden Eagles issues once again. The Dragons would score three runs, and put the game away.
This wraps up the season for the Golden Eagles, who fought hard all season. They are looking forward to year two under new Head Coach Ashton Sangster, who added to the Golden Eagles 2024 win total with six more wins and one more conference win.
