Crookston, Minn. – For the third time this season, Minnesota Crookston won in a walk-off fashion. The Golden Eagles knocked off Newman University, 5-4, in game one at the Washburn Invitational. In game two, the Jennies of Central Missouri would jump on the Golden Eagles early and often for the 8-0 win in five innings.
The game one win was the fourth come-from-behind win for the Golden Eagles already this season.
Minnesota Crookston moves to 5-7 overall.
Game One
The Golden Eagles, the home team on the scoreboard, would break the ice on the scoring in the second inning, as
Rayna French (So., C, La Salle, Manitoba) would drive in
Haley Koch (Sr., C, Mondamin, Iowa) with an RBI double.
That lead wouldn't last long as the Jets would strike for three in the third inning and one more in the top of the fourth.
Much like they have done all season long, the Golden Eagles would slowly but surely chip away at the lead.
Emilee Haggadone (Jr., C, Lincoln, Neb.) would reach on an error to lead off the inning and she would come around to score on a
Hannah Trzinski (Fr., P/1B, Stevens Point, Wis.) RBI double to right center.
With Trzinski at third,
Irelyn Spencer (R-So., IF, Rapid City, S.D.) would hit a sacrifice fly, scoring the freshman.
With runners on the corners, French would come through again, scoring Madison Yandle (Fr., SS, Lakeville, Minn.) with an opposite field RBI single, tying the game at four.
Newman would leave a pair of runners on in the seventh and it wouldn't take long for the maroon and gold to win it in the bottom of the seventh.
Whitnee Curry (Sr., MIF, Lincoln, Neb.) would reach on a four pitch walk and
Ruth Freiberg (Jr., OF, Hopkins, Minn.) would pinch-run. She wouldn't be on base for long, as
Riley Blake (Fr., P/OF, Las Vegas, Nev.) would play hero, tripling in Freiberg for the win.
French and Trzinski led the offensive attack for the Golden Eagles with two hits apiece. French also drove in a pair of runs. Blake, Trzinski and Spencer each drove in a run.
The Golden Eagles looked to a trio of pitchers to get the job done.
Charlotte Dombrowski (Jr., P/OF, Valparaiso, Ind.) got the start and gave up three earned runs on four hits, while striking out two.
Evie Stuck (Sr., P, Papillion, Neb.) came in for Dombrowski and went four innings, while giving up just one earned run.
Alexa Guilford (Jr., P, Crystal City, Manitoba) earned her first win of the season after pitching two thirds of an inning, not allowing a run.
Game Two
Game two would start out slow, as neither team would find the scoreboard through the first 12 outs.
In the top of the third, UCM would strike for a run.
The fourth inning would prove to be the large inning for the Jennies, who would score five runs in that inning, propelling them to the 8-0 win.
Spencer and
Jocelyn Hernandez (Fr., OF, Tracy, Calif.) would collect the only two hits for the Golden Eagles.
Blake fell to 1-2 on the season, after giving up eight runs, half of which were earned, in 4.2 innings of work.
