VIRGINIA, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston tennis team opens the NSIC season with a 1-0 mark after defeating the University of Minnesota Duluth 6-1 in Virginia, Minn., Friday, February 21.
The Golden Eagles improved to 3-2 with the victory, while the Bulldogs dropped to 2-1 with the loss.
Minnesota Crookston swept the doubles match-ups. Daniela de Lucas Rivera (So., Madrid, Spain), and Ariadna Solis Guals (So., Santpedor, Spain) improved to 2-0 at No. 1 doubles with a 6-2 victory over Luana da Silva, and Sydney Friedrich. At the No. 2 slot, Blaike Zander (Sr., Bismarck, N.D.), and Asli Oktay (Fr., Istanbul, Turkey) improved to 1-0 with a 7-5 victory over Olivia Gorten, and Courtney Eppen. At the No. 3 spot, Nadia Cases Mundet (So., Barcelona, Spain), and Kavya Singh (Jr., Agra, India) improved to 2-2 with a 6-4 victory over Brynne Folden, and Lilly Nelson.
In singles, de Lucas Rivera dominated Da Silva, 6-0, 6-1, to improve to 3-1 at the No. 1 slot. At No. 2 singles, Oktay picked up a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory over Carly Chaney to improve to 2-2. At the No. 3 spot, Cases Mundet defeated Isabelle Simon, 6-0, 6-2, to move to 4-1. At the No. 4 slot, Zander upended Friedrich, 6-2, 6-4, to improve to 4-1. At No. 5 singles, Singh was defeated 6-3, 6-3 by Gorten. At the No. 6 spot, Abril Manas Hernandez (Fr., Barcelona, Spain) defeated Olivia Honsey, 6-3, 6-1, to increase her record to 3-2.
The Golden Eagles face St. Cloud State University in an NSIC match Saturday, February 22 at 10:30 a.m., in Virginia, Minn. They fell 4-3 in non-conference play earlier this season with the Huskies.
