Crookston, Minn. - It is that time of year again as the Golden Eagles and the University of St. Thomas Tommies go head to head in the regular season. In net for the Golden Eagles was Adam Goody (Jr., G, Airdrie, Alberta) who enters the game with a 2-1-0 record, a 2.67, and .902 save percentage. For the Tommies it was Van Eigner. He entered the night with a 3-1-0 record, a 3.00 goals average, and a .904 save percentage. The Golden Eagles had a miraculous comeback win tonight to take the game 5-4.
It was an action packed first period full of big hits and a few goals. Goody had to be sharp early, and he was. Goody's fantastic play kept things even at zero. With 12 minutes to play, Mason Romfo (So., F, Langdon, N.D.) was able to push one past Eigner off of the rebound for a powerplay goal. Anthony Foster (Jr., F, Warroad, Minn.) and Alexander Bailey (5th, D, Crosby, N.D.) had the assists. Following the goal, it was back to a goalie show between Goody and Eigner. 15 minutes into the opening frame, Dalston Kelly (Jr., F, Minto, N.D.) wired a shot past Eigner for his third of the season. His goal was also assisted by Bailey. That two goal advantage did not last long before Winston Wheaton scored an unassisted goal for the Tommies to make it a 2-1 game. That would be how the score stayed for the remainder of the first. That was thanks in part to some immaculate saves from Adam Goody.
The second period was almost all goalies. Just 4:52 into the second period, Michael Scherer put one past Adam Goody to tie the game at two apiece. But the remainder was all Goody versus Eigner. Goody saved 16 of the 17 shots he faced in the second and Eigner saved all 16 shots he faced. These two teams were heading into the final 20 minutes dead even.
The Tommies were all over the Golden Eagles from the jump in the third period, and it was reflected when Luke Morisette fired a shot past Goody to claim the Tommies first lead of the night just 2:21 into the period. Two minutes later and the Golden Eagles were staring down a 4-2 deficit following a Drew Fisher goal. However, just as it always is with the Golden Eagles, there was no quit in the team. Three minutes after going down 4-2, Kadin Edwards (Fr., F, Crookston, Minn.) rifled a shot past Eigner and the Golden Eagles and their fans had a fire lit under them. Edwards was assisted by Tyler Lorenz (So., D, Shakopee, Minn.) and Dalston Kelly (Jr., F, Minto, N.D.) and the Golden Eagles only trailed by one. Two minutes later, Anthony Foster had the tying goal with an assist from Mason Romfo. The Golden Eagles had found new life, and that continued as Ben Hines (Jr., F, Detroit Lakes, Minn.) gave the Golden Eagles the lead with an electrifying goal and celebration for the team's third goal in two and a half minutes. The next 10 minutes were some of the best defensive play the Golden Eagles have ever shown and, backed by Adam Goody, they closed out the night with a massive win. Goody made 35 saves on 39 shots, Eigner made 38 saves on 43 shots.
The Golden Eagles and Tommies are back again tomorrow at 2 p.m.
