Crookston, Minn. - The Golden Eagles opened their series against the University of Minnesota Duluth with a 6-2 Golden Eagles win. In net tonight for the Goldens was Adam Goody (Jr., G, Airdrie, Alberta) with a 4-1-0 record, a 3.60 goals against average and a .893 save percentage. Trygvee Lavallie took the net for the Bulldogs, coming in with a 3-5-0 record, a 4.40 goals against average and a .868 save percentage.
It was an all Golden Eagles first period, with Colston Balcerak (Fr., F, Carpentersville, Ill.) opening the scoring for his first career goal just seven minutes into the opening 20. Dalston Kelly (Jr., F, Minto, N.D.) and Tyler Lorenz (So., D, Shakopee, Minn.) had the assists. The goalies locked in after that goal, both looking sharp for the next almost nine minutes before Fox Dodds (5th, F, Watford City, N.D.) netted his eighth of the season with an assist from Aidan McPhee (Sr., D, Brea, Calif.) to take a 2-0 lead. With just 11 seconds left in the period, Braden Van de Kraats (So., F, Medicine Hat, Alberta) tipped home a goal off of a shot from Brody Nordmark (Fr., D, Souris, N.D.) and Anthony Foster (Jr., F, Warroad, Minn.) had the second assist. The Golden Eagles carried a 3-0 lead into the second period.
The second period was a lot lower scoring, with just one goal scored. The physicality was a much larger factor in this period, however, with both teams delivering major blows. It took a while for that first goal, but Ty Prokop finally broke through Adam Goody to get the Bulldogs within two goals. Goody made five saves on six shots in the second period, and he ended the period with 12 saves on 13 shots. Lavallie had 18 saves on 18 shots for 30 saves on 33 shots against.
The Bulldogs put some pressure on the Golden Eagles with Owen Rotz making it a one goal game just 51 seconds into the third period on the powerplay. The Golden Eagles took flight after that one, with Jackson Dodds (5th, F, Watford City, N.D.) putting the Golden Eagles back ahead by a pair. Ben Hines (Jr., F, Detroit Lakes, Minn.) had the lone assist. Braden Van de Kraats put home his second of the game five minutes later on a 5-on-3 man advantage, his goal had assists from Kadin Edwards (Fr., F, Crookston, Minn.) and Anthony Foster. The Golden Eagles scored one last goal with just a minute and some change left, as Van de Kraats completed his first Golden Eagle hat trick.
The Golden Eagles and the Bulldogs are back in action tomorrow afternoon for a 1 p.m. puck drop.
