Fargo, N.D. - Golden Eagle hockey went into Fargo tonight looking to get back into the win column, and they were able to use an explosive third period to win 6-2. In net for the Golden Eagles was Tyler Swanson (So., G, Moorhead, Minn.) who entered the night with a 3-1-0 record, a 1.75 goals against average, and a .935 save percentage. The Bison went with Brode Hillstrom, who came in with a 2-4-1 record, a 4.69 goals against average, and a .880 goals against average.
The first period only saw one goal scored, and it was Jacob Pierson with eight and a half minutes remaining in the opening period. This was one of the rare games where the Golden Eagles were out shot, but Swanson stood tall and only allowed one through the first 20 minutes. The two teams would head to first intermission with the Bison leading 1-0.
The Bison were on the board first in the second period as well, with Thayne Coston netting the goal to extend the Bison lead to two just three minutes and 15 seconds in. With 14 minutes left to play, Ben Hines (Jr., F, Detroit Lakes, Minn.) broke through for the Golden Eagles and made it a one goal game, his goal was unassisted. Seven minutes later, Alexander Bailey (5th, D, Crosby, N.D.) fired home his third goal of the season, and the two teams were even at two. Fox Dodds (5th, F, Watford City, N.D.) and Jackson Dodds (5th, F, Watford City, N.D.) collected the assists on the tying goal. 2-2 was the score as we went to the final 20 minutes.
It took five and a half minutes of the third, but the Golden Eagles collected their first lead of the night with a goal from Anthony Foster (Jr., F, Warroad, Minn.) for his fifth goal of the season, Braden Van de Kraats (So., F, Medicine Hat, Alberta) and Mason Romfo (So., F, Langdon, N.D.) had the assists on what stood as the game winning goal. Three and a half minutes later, Kadin Edwards (Fr., F, Crookston, Minn.) put home his fourth goal of the season, which now puts him with a goal in three straight games. Hines had the only assist on Edwards' goal. Four minutes after the goal that made it 4-2, Foster had his second of the night, Fox Dodds and Dalston Kelly (Jr., F, Minto, N.D.) had the assists. The final goal came with a minute and a half to play, as Braden Van de Kraats put home a goal of his own to secure a 6-2 win for the Golden Eagles.Â
Despite being down 2-0, the Golden Eagles continued to show that resilience they have shown multiple times in the young season. Tyler Swanson was the star of the show for the Golden Eagles tonight, even with the stellar performances by the rest of the team including the two goals from Anthony Foster. Swanson was sharp all night, making 40 saves on 42 shots against. The Golden Eagles only had 22 shots, but turned their lack of shots into a flurry of goals.Â
The Golden Eagles and Bison are back at it tomorrow afternoon with puck drop set for noon.
