Minnesota Crookston Earns Road Split with Huskies

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team picked up a split with St. Cloud State University, falling 4-3 in game one and coming back to pick up a 13-10 victory in the second tilt.

Minnesota Crookston continues their streak of not losing an NSIC series. The only series they have lost this season is the Wayne State College series (February 21-23). They have either won or split every other series. The Golden Eagles are 19-6 since March 12. Minnesota Crookston improved to 26-14 (20-10 NSIC) with Wednesday's split. They reached 20 NSIC wins for the second-straight season, and third time in program history. St. Cloud State improved to 25-16 (21-10 NSIC) with the split. The Huskies are in third place and lead the Golden Eagles by a half game. The Golden Eagles are a game ahead of Wayne State College in fifth place. Minnesota Crookston is 3-1 against St. Cloud State in their last four tilts.

Game One - The Golden Eagles scored three runs in the last two innings to make a late charge, but fell 4-3 to St. Cloud State University in the first game.

Isaac Wensloff (So., RHP, Roseau, Minn.) started and went 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits. He struck out three, and walked two. Joey Connelly (So., LHP, Maple Grove, Minn.) faced two batters, but hit both. Ben Goelz (R-Sr., OF/LHP, Maple Lake, Minn.) pitched 0.2 innings, allowing just a walk. Carsen Barta (Fr., RHP, Fargo, N.D.) put up a zero in the sixth inning, on one hit. Wensloff picked up the loss, falling to 4-2.

The win went to St. Cloud State's Kaden Pfeffer, who pitched a complete game. He allowed three runs on seven hits. Pfeffer struck out eight, and walked three.

Caden Headlee (Sr., OF, Fargo, N.D.) led the Golden Eagles, going 2-of-3, with an RBI and a run scored. Josh Dykhoff (So., RHP/DH, Wadena, Minn.) was 1-of-4, with two RBIs and a run scored. Sawyer Satrom (R-So., IF, Portland, N.D.) went 1-of-4. Kobe Senn (R-So., IF, Fargo, N.D.) was 1-of-2.

The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Calvin James singled in Drew Beier.

St. Cloud State extended their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third. A James sacrifice fly plated Beier to widen the gap to 2-0. In the next at-bat Smith launched one over the fence, plating himself, and Noah Dehne.

The Golden Eagles ended in Pfeffer's no-hitter in the top of the fourth with a Headlee infield single. However, Minnesota Crookston would be unable to get him around, as the score remained 4-0 in favor of the Huskies.

St. Cloud State loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, but the Golden Eagles got a pair of crucial outs when Garrett Bevacqua flew out to center field and Headlee threw out James at the plate for the unconventional double play to get out of the inning.

Minnesota Crookston responded and cut the lead in half with Dykhoff's team-leading ninth home run of the season, driving in himself and Headlee to bring the score to 4-2. The Huskies were able to get out of the inning, but not without the Golden Eagles making a dent in the lead.

Barta mowed down the first two St. Cloud State batters in the bottom of the sixth. Gumbko looked to keep the Huskies alive with a double. However, Barta got Beier to ground out to get out of the frame.

Minnesota Crookston made a late charge in the top of the seventh. With two outs, the Golden Eagles picked up three-consecutive singles from Senn, Satrom, and Headlee. Headlee's single drove in pinch-runner Connor Bushbaum (R-So., OF, Saginaw, Minn.) to cut the deficit to 4-3. However, Pfeffer got Dykhoff to pop out on the first pitch to preserve the narrow victory.

Game Two - The Golden Eagles came back from a 7-0 deficit to defeat the Huskies 13-10 in the second game of the doubleheader. Minnesota Crookston scored 13 runs in the final six innings, including a combined seven in the seventh and eighth frames.

Minnesota Crookston relied on a staff approach at pitcher, as they ended up using seven pitchers. Nate Benning (Fr., LHP, Browerville, Minn.) started and went two innings, allowing six runs on seven hits. Aaron Bennett (So., RHP, Saginaw, Minn.) tossed two innings, allowing one run on one hit. Isaac Roers (R-So., RHP, Stacy, Minn.) went an inning, allowing two runs on three hits. Caden Edwards (R-Jr., LHP, Duluth, Minn.) tossed a scoreless inning. Nate Grafsgaard (R-Jr., RHP, Devils Lake, Minn.) put up a zero on just one hit in one frame. Max Weber (Jr., RHP, St. Paul, Minn.) got the win, his first of the season, tossing one inning and giving up one run on one hit. Jake Osowski (R-Sr., RHP, East Grand Forks, Minn.) picked up his second save after pitching a scoreless ninth stanza.

The Golden Eagles tallied 13 runs on 17 hits. Headlee was 3-of-5, with an RBI and two runs scored. Teddy Giefer (Sr., 1B, Courtland, Minn.) went 2-of-3, with two runs scored. Hjelle was 2-of-5, with five RBIs and two runs scored. Cole Hebl (Fr., OF/1B, Hillsboro, N.D.) finished 3-of-5, with two runs scored. Danny Wensloff (R-Jr., OF/C, Roseau, Minn.) was 2-of-4, with two RBIs and a run scored.

The loss for the Huskies went to Grady Fuchs, who allowed three earned runs on two hits.

St. Cloud State jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the first. Ben Clapp started the scoring with a single to plate Dehne. A Blaine Guthrie double, brought in Clapp, and James to push the lead to 3-0.

The Huskies added to their lead in the second. Mitchell Gumbko scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0. A Dehne two-run home run, scored himself, and Beier to widen the gap to 6-0.

In the third frame, Gumbko doubled down the line to bring in Guthrie to extend the lead to 7-0.

The Golden Eagles put their first dent into the advantage for the Huskies in the fourth when Hjelle tied Dykhoff for the team lead in home runs with his ninth, driving in himself and Giefer to cut it to 7-2.

In the fifth, Hjelle was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, plating Sawyer Satrom (R-So., IF, Portland, N.D.) to trim the deficit to 7-3.

In the sixth stanza, Danny Wensloff doubled to left center, scoring Hebl. Then Mitch Goodwin (R-Sr., SS, Prior Lake, Minn.) doubled down the line to bring in Wensloff to cut it to 7-5.

The Huskies padded their lead in the sixth. Ethan Navratil hit a solo shut to push the lead to 8-5. Dehne then doubled down the line to score Gumbko to make it 9-5.

The Golden Eagles responded in the top of the seventh with Hjelle's team-leading 10th home run, scoring Giefer, and himself. Senn then reached on a fielder's choice, plating Dykhoff to trim the lead for the Huskies to 9-8.

Minnesota Crookston knotted the game 9-9 when Dykhoff singled in Headlee.
