Minnesota Crookston Baseball Picks Up Wednesday Sweep over Beavers

CROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of Bemidji State University Wednesday, April 17. The Golden Eagles defeated the Beavers 8-3 in game one, and picked up a 15-1 run-rule victory in the second tilt.

The Golden Eagles improved to 23-12 (17-8 NSIC) with Wednesday's wins over the Beavers. Minnesota Crookston is 17-4 in their last 21 games. Bemidji State dropped to 1-36 (0-27 NSIC) with the losses. The Golden Eagles have won the last 19 games against the Beavers.

Game One 

The Golden Eagles picked up an 8-3 victory in the first game of the doubleheader led by a complete game outing by Isaac Wensloff (So., RHP, Roseau, Minn.). Isaac Wensloff went seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out seven, and had zero walks improving to 4-1 on the season.

Zach Evenson suffered the loss, allowing eight runs on 10 hits in 5.2 innings. He struck out six, and didn't have a walk. Daniel Pobuda pitched a scoreless 0.1 innings.

The Golden Eagles notched 10 hits in the victory. Mitch Goodwin (R-Sr., SS, Prior Lake, Minn.) went 2-of-3, with one RBI, and two runs scored. Kobe Senn (R-So., IF, Fargo, N.D.) was 2-of-3, with an RBI, and two runs scored. Sawyer Satrom (R-So., IF, Portland, N.D.) set the table at his leadoff position, going 2-of-4, with an RBI, and a run scored. 

Bemidji State took the early 1-0 lead in the second with a Dylan Hedley single, plating Jack Munson.

The Golden Eagles tied the game 1-1 when Teddy Giefer (Sr., 1B, Cortland, Minn.) scored on a Danny Wensloff (Sr., OF/C, Roseau, Minn.) groundout.

Minnesota Crookston took the 2-1 advantage in the third when Senn scored on a wild pitch. They pushed the lead to 3-1 with a Josh Dykhoff (So., RHP/DH, Wadena, Minn.) solo home run. The home run was Dykhoff's eighth of the season. 

Munson trimmed the BSU deficit to 3-2 in the fourth with a solo shot over the fence in left field.

The Golden Eagles added two runs in the bottom of the fifth. A Satrom double scored Goodwin to make it 4-2. To cap off the inning, Satrom scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 5-2.

In the sixth stanza, Goodwin doubled to left center scoring Danny Wensloff. Later in the frame, Senn tripled to right center, plating Goodwin. Senn came in to score on a throwing error by the cut-off man. 

The Beavers pulled within 8-3 in seventh with a solo home run from Ty Karger. However, it would not be enough as the Golden Eagles picked up the victory.

Game Two
Minnesota Crookston controlled the second game from the start, as they defeated the Beavers 15-1 in the run-ruled game. Nate Benning (Fr., LHP, Browerville, Minn.) continued his strong debut season by moving to 3-1 after pitching six innings. Benning allowed one run on two hits. He struck out five, and walked three. Max Weber (Jr., RHP, St. Paul, Minn.) pitched the seventh inning, allowing no runs on one hit. Weber struck out two.

The Golden Eagle bats had 15 hits. Satrom was 3-of-5, with two RBIs, and three runs scored. Giefer finished the tilt 2-of-4, with four RBIs. Caden Headlee (R-Jr., OF, Fargo, N.D.) was 3-of-4, with one RBI, and two runs scored. Cole Hebl (Fr., OF/1B, Hillsboro, N.D.) went 2-of-4, with an RBI. Goodwin was 2-of-2, with two runs scored.

The loss for Bemidji State went to Matt Filippi, who allowed 10 earned runs on 12 hits. He struck out one, and walked one.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Giefer singled, driving in Dykhoff, and Headlee.

Minnesota Crookston pushed the advantage to 3-0 in the second with a Satrom single, scoring Goodwin. The Golden Eagles made it 4-0 when Headlee singled in Senn.

Bemidji State trimmed the Minnesota Crookston lead to 4-1 in the third when Hedley scored on a wild pitch.

The Golden Eagles added three runs in the fourth. A Dykhoff double brought in Headlee, and Satrom to push the tally to 6-1. Hebl doubled to left field, scoring Dykhoff to make it 7-1.

Minnesota Crookston chipped in four runs in fifth. Satrom reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Goodwin. Later in the stanza, Hjelle walked with the bases loaded to bring in Senn to make it 9-1. A Giefer single capped off the inning, plating Dykhoff, and Hjelel to push the lead to 11-1.

Danny Wensloff opened in the sixth with a solo home run, his fifth of the season, extending the tally to 12-1. Americo Sculati (R-So., OF, Golden Valley, Minn.) walked with the bases loaded to bring in Aaron Wensloff (Fr., IF, Roseau, Minn.) to widen the gap to 13-1. Hjelle was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Satrom to make it 14-1. Angelo Pacyga (R-So., OF, Sunfish Lake, Minn.) scored on a wild pitch to bring the score to 15-1.

Minnesota Crookston would pick up the run-rule win as the Beavers were unable to chop into the deficit in the bottom of the seventh.

The Golden Eagles head to Minnesota State University for a three-game series commencing Saturday, April 20.
