Golden Eagles Pick Up Important Sweep Against Mavericks

MANKATO, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team picks up a doubleheader sweep of Minnesota State University Saturday, April 20 at Bowyer Field in Mankato, Minn. The Golden Eagles edged the Mavericks 3-2 in the first game, and used a six-run inning to defeat Minnesota State 8-4 in the second tilt.

Minnesota Crookston improved to 25-12 (19-8 NSIC) with Saturday's sweep. The Golden Eagles have won five-straight games. They are 19-4 in their last 23 games. Minnesota Crookston has either won or split every NSIC series other than their first of the season against Wayne State College. The Golden Eagles are 4-2 in their last six games against the Mavericks. Minnesota Crookston moved into third place, and is a half game back of the Mavericks in second place, making tomorrow's final game in the series even more crucial. The Golden Eagles have reached 24 wins for the seventh season in the last 10 years, and they have reached 25 wins for the fifth time in the last 10 seasons. 

Game One
The Golden Eagles used a two RBI single in the top of the fifth from Caden Headlee (R-Jr., OF, Fargo, N.D.) to defeat the Mavericks 3-2. Minnesota Crookston was lifted by Jake Osowski (R-Sr., RHP, East Grand Forks, Minn.), who improved to 7-0 with the win. Osowski allowed two runs on six hits in 6.1 innings. He struck out five, and walked two. Nate Grafsgaard (Sr., RHP, Devils Lake, N.D.) picked up his first save, allowing no runs on no hits in 0.2 innings.

Minnesota Crookston notched four hits in the game. Headlee was 1-of-3, with two RBIs. Sawyer Satrom (R-So., IF, Portland, N.D.) went 1-of-2, with an RBI. Danny Wensloff (Sr., OF/C, Roseau, Minn.) was 1-of-1, with two runs scored. Mitch Goodwin (R-Sr., SS, Prior Lake, Minn.) went 1-of-3, with one run scored.

Sam George suffered the loss for the Mavericks in game one, after allowing three runs on three hits. He struck out three, and walked three. 

Minnesota State took the 1-0 lead in the first with a solo shot from Ryan Wickman.

The Mavericks pushed their lead to 2-0 with a solo home run from Louis Magers in the bottom of the second.

The Golden Eagles pulled within 2-1 in the third with a Satrom single to plate Danny Wensloff

Minnesota Crookston tipped the score in their favor in the fifth when Headlee hit a two RBI single, scoring Goodwin, and Wensloff. The Golden Eagles were able to hold on for the 3-2 win. 

Game Two

The Golden Eagles earned an 8-4 win in the second tilt of the doubleheader. Minnesota Crookston used a six-run third inning to catapult them to the victory. Minnesota State made a dent in the lead, but were unable to overcome the six-run inning. 

Josh Dykhoff started the second game and went five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. Dykhoff struck out five, and walked one. Dykhoff improved to 2-2 with the victory. Isaac Roers (R-So., RHP, Stacy, Minn.) pitched three scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit. Caden Edwards (R-Jr., LHP, Duluth, Minn.) tossed a scoreless ninth inning. 

The loss went to Minnesota State's Cale Haugen, who allowed five runs on five hits. He struck out three, and walked four.

The Golden Eagles notched 11 hits in the tilt. Headlee went 3-of-5, with an RBI and a run scored. Jake Hjelle (R-Sr., OF/1B, East Grand Forks, Minn.) was 2-of-5, with two runs scored. Cole Hebl (Fr., OF/1B, Hillsboro, N.D.) finished 2-of-4, with two RBIs and two runs scored. Wensloff was 2-of-2, with three RBIs and one run scored.

The Golden Eagles broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third as they scored six runs. Hebl opened up the charge with a RBI double, plating Hjelle. Danny Wensloff continued the scoring with a three run home run, scoring himself, Hebl, and Teddy Giefer (Sr., 1B, Courtland, Minn.) to push the score to 5-0. The home run was Wensloff's sixth of the season. A Satrom single brought in Kobe Senn (R-So., IF, Fargo, N.D.) to extend the advantage to 6-0.

Minnesota Crookston padded their lead in the fourth with a sacrifice fly from Hebl, plating Hjelle to make it 7-0. 

The Mavericks got three-straight singles to open the bottom of the fourth from Nick Baker, Matt Fleischhacker, and Hunter Ranweiler. A Tanner Thompson double brought in Baker, and Fleischhacker to trim the deficit to 7-2. Ryan Friedges singled to left field to plate Hunter Ranweiler to bring the score within 7-3. An Aidan Byrne sacrifice fly scored Thompson to cut the deficit to 7-4, with one out. Dykhoff pitched out of further trouble to get out of the inning.

The Golden Eagles added a run in the top of the seventh when Senn reached on a fielder's choice, driving in Hebl to make it 8-4.

Edwards struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth, and got Wickman to groundout to preserve the 8-4 win. 

The Golden Eagles and Mavericks wrap up their series Saturday, April 21 at 12 p.m.
