CROOKSTON, Minn. - North Dakota State University outscored the University of Minnesota Crookston hockey team 5-2 in the third period to pick up a 7-5 win Sunday, December 1 at the Crookston Sports Center. Nicholas Helland guided the Bison with four points, two goals and two assists.
North Dakota State improved to 10-5-1 with Sunday's win, while Minnesota Crookston dropped to 10-4 with the loss to begin December. Minnesota Crookston splits the series with North Dakota State. The Golden Eagles are 5-1 at the Crookston Sports Center this season.
Fox Dodds (R-Jr., F, Watford City, N.D.) paced the Golden Eagles with a goal, and two assists. Jackson Dodds (R-Jr., F, Watford City, N.D.), and Aiden Morelli (Jr., F, Minot, N.D.) each added a goal, and an assist Sunday.
Helland paced the Bison with two goals, and two assists. Jacob Pierson added a goal, and two apples. Kyan Rieder notched two goals, and a helper.
In goal, Adam Goody (So., G, Airdrie, Alberta) allowed six goals, with 23 saves, and a .793 saves percentage. Brode Hillstrom allowed five goals for NDSU, with 31 saves.
Minnesota Crookston edged North Dakota State in shots on goal 36-30. The Golden Eagles were 1-of-1 on power plays, while the Bison went 0-of-2.
The Golden Eagles commenced the scoring in the sixth minute of the first period when Ben Hines (So., F, Detroit Lakes, Minn.) scored his second goal of the season. Fox Dodds, and Logan Syrup (Sr., D/F, Park River, N.D.) picked up assists. The Bison had the equalizer in the final minute of the first when Pierson scored off helpers from Davis Gohman, and Caden Carter.
Minnesota Crookston pushed the advantage to 2-1 on a rocket launched off the stick of Aidan McPhee (So., D, Brea, Calif.) after Morelli won the face-off to pick up the assist. The Golden Eagles widened the gap to 3-1 when Jackson Dodds tallied the power-play goal off apples from Dylan Neubauer (Sr., D, Grand Forks, N.D.), and Alexander Bailey (Jr., D, Crosby, N.D.). The Bison trimmed the deficit to 3-2 in the 17th minute when Helland found the back of the net off assists from Pierson, and Cameron Coe.
The third period would be a busy one for both teams, with a combined seven goals in 20 minutes. NDSU knotted the game 3-3 in the eighth minute when Gohman scored off a breakaway off an assist from Rieder. The Golden Eagles took the lead back 4-3 three minutes later when Fox Dodds scored off helpers from Mason Romfo (Fr., F, Langdon, N.D.), and Anthony Foster (So., F, Warroad, Minn.). The Bison scored again just over a minute later when Helland notched the tally off apples from Clay Ihrke, and Jack Watzke. NDSU took the advantage 5-4 in the 14th minute when Rieder found the back of the net off assists from Pierson, and Isaac Schmitt.
The Golden Eagles notched the equalizer in the 16th minute when Morelli scored off assists from twins Fox Dodds, and Jackson Dodds.
NDSU took the lead back 6-5 in the 18th minute when Schmitt scored off assists from Watzke, and Helland. The Bison put a stamp on the win with an empty netter from Rieder, off assists from Helland, and Cooper Sorby.
The Golden Eagles remain at home to host Saint John's University Friday, December 6 at the Crookston Sports Center.
