Minnesota Crookston Swept by Michigan Tech to Close Out UP Open on Saturday

Box Score Marquette, Mich. – The University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball team looked to close out the UP Open with a win over Michigan Tech on Saturday morning in Marquette, Mich.
 
The Golden Eagles would fall to Michigan Tech in three sets.
 
Minnesota Crookston closes out the opening weekend at 1-3 overall.
 
Set One
MTU would score the first two points of the match, but the Golden Eagles would answer with two straight on an Emma Malek (Fr., OH/RS, Plainfield, Ill.) kill and a Dana Melby (R-Fr., S, Gonvick, Minn.) service ace.
 
Trailing 4-2, the Golden Eagles would score five of the sets next six points, taking a 7-5 lead following an attack error by Lindy Qujiri of Michigan Tech.
 
The Golden Eagles would continue to have a one point lead until the Huskies would go on a service run and take a 17-12 lead.
 
Following a Madison Carsten (Fr., OH, Wadena, Minn.) kill, Maya Jones (Fr., OH, New Braunfels, Texas( would go on a service run of her own, eventually giving the Golden Eagles back the lead at 19-18.
 
From there, MTU would take a 21-19 lead, halted by a Mara Weisensel (Sr., MH, New Ulm, Minn.) kill. The Huskies would go on to win set one, 25-20.
 
Set Two
The second set would go the way of the Huskies.
 
MTU would go up 7-2, but trusted veteran Weisensel would get the Golden Eagles back within four at 7-3.
 
The Golden Eagles would call an early timeout trailing 10-4. Following the timeout, the Golden Eagles would score three straight, including a kill from Audrey Cariveau (So., OH, Kevil, Kent.).
 
MTU would take a 24-9 lead, but Malek would go on a run at the service line, scoring six straight points for the Golden Eagles.
 
MTU would eventually finish the set and win 25-15.
 
Set Three
MTU would jump out to a quick start and control the third set for the set three win and the sweep of the match.
 
Stats
Cariveau, Carsten and Weisensel each finished with four kills in the match.
 
Carsten also added seven digs, while Kailee Waasdorp (Fr., DS, West Fargo, N.D.) added five digs in the back row.
 
What's Next
Minnesota Crookston will be back in action next weekend for their final non-conference tournament of 2023. The Golden Eagles will travel to Odessa, Texas for four games on Thursday through Saturday, starting with host school Texas Permian Basin on Thursday at 4 P.M.
