BEMIDJI, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston tennis team concluded the 2023 season with a pair of losses to Southwest Minnesota State University and Minnesota State University. The Golden Eagles were defeated 5-2 by the Mustangs, and 7-0 by the Mavericks.
The Golden Eagles ended their season with their best mark in program history at 7-10 (2-9 NSIC). UMN Crookston fell just short of the NSIC Tournament. The Golden Eagles finished in 10
th place. Minnesota State improved to 13-1 (10-1 NSIC) with the victory. Southwest Minnesota State improved to 4-12 (4-6 NSIC) and are in line to claim the final spot in the NSIC Tournament.
Against the Mustangs, UMN Crookston picked up a doubles win at the No. 2 slot as
Madeleine Schneider (Jr., Gartringen, Germany) and
Sarah Velasquez (Sr., Chino, Calif.) defeated Roz Oye and Faith Madikwe. Schneider and Velasquez improved to 8-7. At the No. 1 spot, Kayva Singh (So., Agra, India) and
Blaike Zander (So., Bismarck, N.D.) narrowly fell 7-6 to Courtenay Leonard and Gabriela Almeida. At the No. 3 slot,
Tasha Achermann (Sr., Motley, Minn.) and
Samantha Gutierrez (Sr., Riverside, Calif.) fell 6-0 to Joana Reis Indio and Maura Weins.
In singles, Schneider picked up her 14
th singles win of the season to move to 14-2 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Leonard. At the No. 5 slot, Velasquez upended Wiens, 6-3, 6-4 to improve to 8-7.
In the match with Minnesota State, Achermann and Gutierrez fell 6-2 at No. 3 doubles to Hana Minisy and Daria Podmogilnaia for the closest doubles match of the day.
In singles, Schneider had a great match with Freia Lawrence, going to three sets. However, she fell 6-4. 5-7., 10-4. Schneider ended the season with a 14-3 mark in singles, the best mark at No. 1 singles in the program's history. Schneider is six singles wins away from breaking Catherine Brown's mark for the most singles wins at any position for a Golden Eagle. At No. 6 singles,
Kaydance Hinn (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.) had a strong match but fell 6-4. 7-5 to Brynn Psooy.
The matches marked the final ones for Achermann, Gutierrez, Velasquez,
Michelle Swyter (Sr., Perham, Minn.), and
Ashley Chomyn (Sr., Winnipeg, Manitoba).
