GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston tennis team continued the best start in program history with a 6-1 victory over Bemidji State University. The victory is UMN Crookston's first NSIC win since defeating the University of Minnesota Duluth February 8, 2014.
The Golden Eagles are 3-1 (1-0 NSIC) to open the 2023 season. Minnesota Crookston swept Bemidji State for the season, as they defeated the Beavers in non-conference play 4-3 on February 2. Bemidji State drops to 1-5 with the loss.
Madeleine Schneider (Jr., Gartringen, Germany) moved to 4-0 at No. 1 singles with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Bianca Lopez-Oro. Schneider battled back in the first set after falling behind early.
The Golden Eagles top doubles duo of
Blaike Zander (So., Mandan, N.D.) and
Kavya Singh (So., Agra, India) moved to 3-1 with a 6-4 victory over Lopez Oro and Nicoleta Anestiadi. At the No. 2 doubles slot, Schneider and
Sarah Velasquez (Sr., Chino, Calif.) moved to 3-1 with a 6-0 win over Isabela Nelson and Laura Burger. At the No. 3 doubles spot, Bemidji State's Lexi Leitner and Lily Jones upended
Tasha Achermann (Sr., Motley, Minn.) and
Kaydance Hinn (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.), 6-2.
Singh had a dominant singles performance at the No. 3 slot with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Burger.
Michelle Swyter (Sr., Perham, Minn.) defeated Nelson, 6-4, 6-0. Velasquez took the win in three sets at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 3-6,10-4, defeating Jones. At No. 6 singles,
Ashley Chomyn (Sr., Winnipeg, Manitoba) defeated Leitner, 6-1, 6-4.
Minnesota Crookston will face Crown College in a non-conference match February 17 in St. Louis Park, Minn.
