BLAINE, Minn. –
Mitchell Coleman (So., F, Hatton, N.D.) tipped the puck in to send the University of Minnesota Crookston hockey team to a double overtime win Friday, February 10 as they defeated the University of Minnesota 5-4. The Golden Eagles advance to the semifinals of the WCCHA Tournament at the NSC Super Rink in Blaine, Minn.
Coleman, a Golden Eagle hockey legacy, proved to be the hero on Friday, scoring off assists from
Dylan Neubauer (So., F, Thompson, N.D.), and
Dylan Borseth (Sr., F, Williston, N.D.). Minnesota Crookston, the 19
th ranked team in the nation, moved to 21-4-1 with the tournament win. The Golden Eagles moved to 2-1 against the Golden Gophers this season. Minnesota Crookston advances to play the University of St. Thomas in the semifinals of the WCCHA Tournament Saturday, February 11 at 5 p.m. at NSC Super Rink – rink one in Blaine, Minn.
Jared Aamold (So., G, Breckenridge, Minn.) got the win in between the pipes, making several crucial saves down the stretch. Aamold is 9-3 on the 2022-23 campaign, with a 2.54 goals against average.
Jackson Fuller (So., F, Minneapolis, Minn.) opened the scoring in the fourth minute, his 18
th goal of the season. He scored off assists from
Zach Larson (Jr., F, Grand Forks, N.D.), and
Logan Syrup (So., F, Park River, N.D.). The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 2-0 in the 15
th minute of the first period as
Tyler Zahradka (Jr., F, Grand Forks, N.D.) found the back of the net off helpers from
Tristan Morneault (Jr., F, Dieppe, New Brunswick), and Zahradka.
Minnesota scored a late tally in the first period when Jack Kimlinger scored off assists from Tim Adler and Shane Griffin.
The Golden Gophers picked up goals from Roy Chebaclo and William Kopka in the second period to knot the game up 3-3.
The Golden Gophers scored the go-ahead goal in the third period to make it 4-3, as Blake Woodson scored in the sixth minute. Minnesota Crookston knotted it up 4-4 on a goal from
Tristan Morneault (Jr., F, Dieppe, New Brunswick) off assists from Fuller and
Logan Syrup in the 17
th minute.
The Golden Eagles played a scoreless first overtime period on three-on-three hockey and went into a second overtime period, where they proved to be victorious on Coleman's goal.
Minnesota Crookston will look to advance to the WCCHA Championship against either the University of Wisconsin or the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, but they will have to go through No. 4 Saint Thomas.
