GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston tennis team defeated the University of Minnesota Morris Friday, February 10 7-0 at Choice Health & Fitness in Grand Forks, N.D.
The Golden Eagles start the season with a 2-1 mark after Friday's win over the Cougars. Minnesota Crookston is off to their best start in school history. Minnesota Morris falls to 0-1 with the loss.
Minnesota Crookston opened up the night by sweeping the doubles matches.
Blaike Zander (So., Mandan, N.D.) and
Kavya Singh (So., Agra, India) moved to 2-1 at No. 1 doubles with a 6-2 win over Kiley Rodarmel and Allison Bruhn.
Madeleine Schneider (Jr., Gartringen, Germany) and
Sarah Velasquez (Sr., Chino, Calif.) improved to 2-1 with a 6-1 victory over Abby Burquest and Valerie Gail. At No. 3 doubles,
Tasha Achermann (Sr., Motley, Minn.) and
Kaydance Hinn (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.) upended Marybeth Tautges and Ava Weber, 6-1.
In singles, Schneider moved to an unblemished 3-0 at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Rodarmel. At No. 2 singles, Zander defeated Burquest, 6-2, 6-1. At the No. 3 slot, Singh picked up the win 6-0, 6-0 over Bruhn. At the No. 4 spot,
Michelle Swyter (Sr., Perham, Minn.) defeated Gail in three, 6-3, 3-6, 11-9. At the No. 5 slot, Velasquez defeated Tautges, 6-0, 6-0.
Ashley Chomyn (Sr., Winnipeg, Manitoba) made it a perfect evening for the Golden Eagles, with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Weber.
The Golden Eagles will look to continue their winning start at 10:30 a.m. against Bemidji State University in their first conference match of the season.
