Minnesota Crookston Hockey Comeback Falls Short in 4-3 Loss at Jamestown

JAMESTOWN, N.D. - The University of Minnesota Crookston hockey team had their third period comeback fall short in a 4-3 loss to the University of Jamestown at John L. Wilson Arena in Jamestown, N.D. The Golden Eagles scored two goals in just over two minutes in the third period, and peppered the goal late, but were unable to find the equalizer.

The U of M Crookston opens the season with an 0-1 (0-1 WCCHA) mark. Jamestown improved to 3-0 (1-0 WCCHA) with Friday night's win. Friday's game was the season opener for the Golden Eagles. The Jimmies snapped a two-game win streak for Minnesota Crookston in the series. The Golden Eagles continue to lead the series 7-4.

Minnesota Crookston was guided by Fox Dodds (Jr., F, Watford City, N.D.), the Williston State College transfer, who made his Golden Eagle debut. Dodds scored one goal and an assist. 

Jamestown looked to Josh Hoffman with two goals.

The Jimmies jumped on the scoreboard in the fifth minute of the first period when Hoffman scored off assists from Lukas Brockman, and Marquez Ginger. The Golden Eagles found the net for the first time for the 2023-24 season in the 19th minute when long-time center Tyler Zahradka (Sr., F, Grand Forks, N.D.) scored off assists from Dodds, and Logan Syrup (Jr., F, Park River, N.D.). The goal came on the power play. Jamestown went ahead 2-1 in the final minute of the first stanza with a Christopher Wracker short-handed goal.

Jamestown had a great second period, as they put distance between them and the Golden Eagles. The Jimmies went ahead 3-1 with Hoffman's second goal, this time off helpers from Brockman, and Kingsley Brockett. Jamestown pushed the lead to 4-1 in the 18th minute with Ben Hines' goal off assists from Wracker, and Justin King.

The score remained 4-1 until a flurry late for the Golden Eagles in the third period. Dodds scored his first goal as a Golden Eagle, off a Mitchell Coleman (Jr., F, Hatton, N.D.) in the 12th minute. Just over two minutes later, Nathan Ayotte (Fr., F, Morris, Manitoba) scored his first collegiate goal, off assists from Jackson Fuller (Jr., F, Bloomington, Minn.), and Jake Huska (Sr., D, Preeceville, Saskatchewan). The Golden Eagles pulled their goalie for the final 2:22 of the game, and were able to put pressure on, but were unable to find the back of the net as they fell 4-3.

Adam Goody (Fr., G, Airdrie, Alberta) started his first career game in between the pipes. He played 40 minutes, allowing four goals, and picking up 19 saves. Jared Aamold (Jr., G, Breckenridge, Minn.) came on and played 17:38 in the final period, and kept the Golden Eagles in it. He allowed no goals, and had four saves. 

The U of M Crookston had 33 shots on goal, to 27 for Jamestown. Minnesota Crookston was 1-of-2 on the power play, while Jamestown was 0-of-1. 

The Golden Eagles will look to knot up the series with the Jimmies Saturday, October 14  at 12 p.m., in Jamestown, N.D.
