CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team fell 84-69 to Concordia University-St. Paul Saturday, January 14 at Gary Senske Court at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Golden Bears outscored the Golden Eagles 29-13 in the third quarter. Minnesota Crookston made up ground in the fourth quarter, but it would be too little too late.
Minnesota Crookston fell to 8-10 (7-5 NSIC) with the loss. Concordia-St. Paul improved to 8-8 (5-7 NSIC) with the victory. The Golden Bears have won the last five games in the series. Minnesota Crookston is in fourth place in the NSIC North after the weekend.
The Golden Eagles were guided by
Emma Miller (Fr., G, Albertville, Minn.), with 18 points and five rebounds.
Bren Fox (R-Sr., F/C, Norwood Young America, Minn.) chipped in 12 points and four rebounds.
Natalie Mikrot (Fr., Willow River, Minn.) came off the bench for nine points.
Erika Lane (So., G, Breezy Point, Minn.) added eight points.
Minnesota Crookston shot just 8-of-28 in the first half for 28.5 percent. The Golden Eagles finished the game 23-of-69 for 39.0 percent. UMN Crookston went 8-of-23 for 34.8 percent from beyond the arc, and 15-of-18 for 83.3 percent from the stripe.
Concordia-St. Paul outrebounded the Golden Eagles 37-31. The Golden Bears shot lights out Saturday, hitting 33-of-64 for 51.6 percent. Concordia-St. Paul went 10-of-27 for 37.0 percent from distance. Concordia-St. Paul looked to Ally Gietzel with 20 points and nine boards. Megan Gamble added 14 points and seven boards. Jalyn Shaw and Lauren Feddema each added 12 points.
The two teams went back and forth early on in the first quarter until Concordia-St. Paul used a 6-2 run to close out the stanza and take the 17-12 advantage.
The Golden Bears extended their lead to 21-12 after an Emma Dengerud bucket. Minnesota Crookston responded with a 9-2 run, culminating with a Miller trey to pull the Golden Eagles within two points with 6:03 left in the third quarter. The Golden Bears closed out the second quarter on a 15-6 run as a pair of Gietzel free throws gave Concordia-St. Paul a 38-27 lead.
Concordia-St. Paul ran out of the gate in the third quarter, as they used a 14-0 run propelled by seven points to Gietzel. Minnesota Crookston would trail 67-40 at the quarter break after a pair of free throws from Jadyn Hanson.
The Golden Eagles closed out the gate on a 15-4 run, as Concordia-St. Paul won 84-69.
Minnesota Crookston returns to action Friday, January 20 at Augustana University at 7:30 p.m., in Sioux Falls, S.D.
