KENOSHA, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Crookston wrapped up the 2022 Hampton Inn Invitational with a pair of 3-0 losses to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and No. 23 Michigan Technological University.
The Golden Eagles went 1-3 at the Hampton Inn Invitational at De Simone Arena, including a win over the University of Illinois Springfield. Michigan Tech improves to 6-1 with the victory, while Parkside improves to 4-3.
Match One
The Golden Eagles went toe-to-toe in all three sets against the Rangers. Minnesota Crookston fell 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-23). Minnesota Crookston hit .075 on the match, while Wisconsin-Parkside swung .245 for the match.
Minnesota Crookston was paced by
Bailey Schaefer (So., OH, Evansville, Minn.), who had 10 kills and hit .182.
Mara Weisensel (Jr., MH, New Ulm, Minn.) added seven kills and hit .111.
Natalie Koke (R-Sr., S, Caledonia, Wis.) notched 20 assists for the match.
Defensively, Schaefer completed a double-double with 11 digs.
Layne Whaley (So., Lib., Ashland, Neb.) chipped in 10 digs.
Maria Jose Bustos Garcia (Sr., MH, C artagena, Colombia) led the block with two block assists.
The Rangers were led offensively by Ava Irvin with 10 kills. Karlee Lois led the team with 15 assists, while Elle Truckenbrod had 19 digs.
The Golden Eagles were tied up 20-20 late in the first set after a kill from
Audrey Cariveau (Fr., OH, Kevil, Ky.). Led by two service aces from Lexi Packard, the Rangers rattled off five-consecutive points to win the frame 25-20.
Minnesota Crookston jumped out to an early 7-3 lead after a kill from
Charlee Krieg (Jr., RS, Cavalier, N.D.). The Rangers rallied and took the lead 22-15 after a kill from Lydia Biggin. UMN Crookston did not give in as they closed to within 22-19 following a kill from Weisensel. Wisconsin-Parkside closed the match out on a 3-0 run to win 25-19.
UMN Crookston jumped out to a quick 8-1 advantage in the third set following a Cariveau service ace. The Golden Eagles continued to hold on to a 14-6 lead after an attack error. The Rangers responded by taking 13 of the final 20 points of the set and match to take the frame 25-23 and the match 3-0.
Match Two
The Golden Eagles fell 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-18) to Michigan Tech Saturday, September 3. UMN Crookston hit .118 for the match, while the Huskies finished with a .273 hitting percentage.
Schaefer guided Minnesota Crookston with nine kills and a .227 hitting percentage. Weisensel finished the match hitting .467 with eight kills. Koke guided the offense with 21 assists.
Defensively, UMN Crookston was paced by 13 digs from Whaley, while Schaefer chipped in 10.
Michigan Tech was propelled by 12 kills from Meg Raabe, while Jillian Kuizenga added 10 kills. Lina Espejo-Ramirez led the team with 32 assists. On the defensive end, Carissa Beyer led the team with 16 digs.
Minnesota Crookston was within four points at 19-15 in the first set following a Schaefer kill, however Michigan Tech rattled off the final six points to win the stanza 25-15.
UMN Crookston held an 18-13 lead in the second set following a block from Weisensel. They continued to hold a 20-15 advantage after a kill from Weisensel. Michigan Tech took over from there as they took 10 of the final 12 points to win 25-22.
The Golden Eagles were within two points of the Huskies in the third set (18-16) after an attack error. Michigan Tech ended the set on a 7-2 run to win 25-18 following a Beyer service ace, as they took the match 3-0.
The Golden Eagles open NSIC play on the road at Minnesota State University Moorhead Friday, September 9 at 6 p.m. in Moorhead, Minn.
