Crookston, Minn. – It only took freshman
Audrey Cariveau (Fr., OH, Kevil, Kent.) just 12 matches to break a school record. On Saturday afternoon in a five-set loss to the University of Mary (28-26, 20-25, 25-19, 21-25, 13-15), the Kentucky native set a pair of school records with 29 kills and 82 total attacks. Both are school records in the Division-II era.
Minnesota Crookston falls to 2-10 (1-3 NSIC), while the Marauders improve to 2-10 (1-3 NSIC).
Set One
It wouldn't take long for Cariveau to start her record breaking performance. Cariveau had two kills already in the first three points for the Golden Eagles, as the Golden Eagles would take control early with a 7-2 lead.
A key theme in the match was the Marauders wouldn't go away quietly in any point of the match. UMary would score five in a row for a 9-8 lead, but an UMary error and Cariveau kill would give the Golden Eagles back a lead.
Leading 23-20, the Marauders would answer with four in a row and would have set point three different times, but the Golden Eagles would answer every time.
Mara Weisensel (Jr., MH, New Ulm, Minn.) would gather two of her career-high 20 kills to help the Golden Eagles win the first set, 28-26.
Set Two
For the second straight set, Minnesota Crookston would lead 2-0 early, highlighted by back-to-back kills from
Maria Jose Bustos Garcia (R-Sr., MH, Cartagena, Columbia).
The two teams would go back-and-forth throughout the match, until the Marauders would extend their lead to 14-9.
A pair of Weisensel kills and a
Bailey Schaefer (So., OH, Brandon, Minn.) kills would get the Golden Eagles back within one.
The maroon and gold would knot things up at 18 and 19 apiece, but the Marauders would pull away for the four point win in the second set.
Set Three
Yet again, it would be a 2-0 lead for the Golden Eagles to open up the set. A Cariveau service ace would help the Golden Eagles stretch their lead to 5-1.
Later on in the set, the Golden Eagles would continue to feed Weisensel and Cariveau. The dynamic duo would help the Golden Eagles lead 20-15.
A pair of Schaefer kills and a
Layne Whaley (So., DS, Ashland, Neb.) service ace would give the Golden Eagles set point. Weisensel would finish off the set with a kill, to put the Golden Eagles up 2-1 in the match.
Set Four
The fourth set would start out going back-and-forth, but a 5-0 Golden Eagle run, helped by a pair of Marauder errors, would give the Golden Eagles a 10-5 lead.
Kora Norland (So., S, Fosston, Minn.) would go on a 3-0 run at the service line, forcing a UMary timeout, with the Golden Eagles up 13-7.
From that timeout, the Marauders would control the set. Trailing 18-15, UMary would score six straight points to lead 21-18. The run would be halted by a Schaefer kill.
UMary would win the fourth set 25-21.
Set Five
For the second straight match, Minnesota Crookston would go the distance in a match.
The fifth set would see five ties, but the Golden Eagles would find themselves trailing by two at 7-5. A pair of Weisensel kills would tie things up at seven.
Another Norland run at the service line, this time a 4-0 run would force an Abby Pollart timeout. All four points in that run came on a kill by Cariveau.
The set would be tied at 13, but the Marauders would score the next two, winning the set and stealing the match, three sets to two.
