ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's tennis team picked up their first team victory since March 29, 2014 with a 7-0 victory Monday, March 14 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. over Stevenson University. It had been 2,907 days since the last win for the Golden Eagles showing the hard work the 2022 squad has put in so far this season. The victory also marks the first sweep of all singles and doubles matches since a 9-0 win March 1, 2014 over Bethany Lutheran College.
The Golden Eagles improved to 1-7 with Monday's victory. Stevenson dropped to 1-3 on the season.
In doubles, UMN Crookston swept the doubles point. At the No. 1 slot,
Madeleine Schneider (So., Gartringen, Germany) and
Sarah Velasquez (So., Chino, Calif.) picked up a 6-1 victory over Torrienne Emery and Jacquelyn Nesbeth. At the No. 2 spot,
Samantha Gutierrez (So., Riverside, Calif.) and
Michelle Swyter (Jr., Perham, Minn.) earned a 6-1 win over Kera Skove and Jazmine Arias. At the No. 3 doubles slot,
Kaydance Hinn (Fr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) and
Tasha Achermann (So., Motley, Minn.) picked up a 6-0 sweep over Eden Platt and Jess Sesay. The No. 1 and No. 2 pairs picked up their first doubles victories of 2022. Hinn and Achermann picked up their first, as well, but the Golden Eagles are 4-4 overall at the No. 3 spot as a team.
In singles, Schneider continued the best start of a No. 1 singles player at UMN Crookston since Catherine Brown in 2016. Schneider moved to 4-4 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Emery. At the No. 2 spot, Swyter picked up her first win of the season with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Nesbeth. At the No. 3 slot, Velasquez earned her first victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Skove. At the No. 4 spot, Achermann earned her second singles win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Arias. At the No. 5 slot, Gutierrez picked up her first singles win of the season with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Platt. At the No. 6 singles,
Ashley Chomyn (Jr., Winnipeg, Manitoba) improved to 3-0 on the season with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Sesay.
The Golden Eagles continue their Florida trip with a match Tuesday, March 15 at 11:30 a.m. C.T. versus Scranton University in Orlando, Fla.
