Wayne, Neb. – Wayne State College proved why they are the top team in the nation, sweeping Minnesota Crookston (8-25, 10-25, 10-25) in Wayne on Saturday.
Minnesota Crookston falls to 2-14 (1-7 NSIC), while the Wildcats remain undefeated at 18-0 (8-0 NSIC).
Set One
In the opening set, WSC would score nine of the first ten and take a 9-1 lead, but
Bailey Schaefer (So., OH, Brandon, Minn.) would collect a kill, cutting the lead to 9-2.
WSC would eventually lead 19-5 and the Golden Eagles would try to chip away, but would lose the first set, 25-8.
Set Two
Once again, the Wildcats would get off to a blazing start, taking a 10-0 lead.
Back-to-back kills from Schaefer and
Mara Weisensel (Jr., MH, New Ulm, Minn.) would get the Golden Eagles within eight at 17-9, but the Wildcats would finish off the set, 25-10.
Set Three
As was the theme in the match, WSC would start fast, taking an 11-3 lead, but
Audrey Cariveau (Fr., OH, Kevil, Kent.) would collect a kill and a service ace from
Natalie Koke (R-Sr., S, Caledonia, Wis.) would cut the deficit to 11-5.
The Golden Eagles would try to chip away more at the lead, but the Wildcats proved to be too strong, winning the set by 15 and the match in three sets.
Individual Stats
Schaefer led the way with five kills, while Weisensel finished with four in the match. Koke finished with 12 assists and six digs.
What's Next
The Golden Eagles are back home next weekend for homecoming, as they host Minnesota State on Friday night starting at 6 PM, inside Lysaker Gymnasium.
