Bulldogs Pitching Leads to Sweep of Golden Eagles on Tuesday Afternoon

Duluth, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston softball team traveled down Highway-2 to Duluth for a pair of games with the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth.
 
The Bulldogs pitching staff proved to be too much for the young Golden Eagles lineup, holding the Golden Eagles to just one run on the day, sweeping Minnesota Crookston, 10-0 and 9-1.
 
Minnesota Crookston falls to 5-17 overall (1-7 NSIC), while the Bulldogs improve to 16-6 overall. (6-2 NSIC)
 
Game One
In game one, the Bulldogs used their power to jump out to a quick 3-0 lead, after a two run home run from Kiana Bender in the bottom of the third and a Taylor Koehnen solo shot in the bottom of the fourth.
 
That would be the start of an eight run inning for the Bulldogs, which would be capped off by an Emma Frost two run single, making it 10-0.
 
The Golden Eagles weren't able to score in the top of the fifth, meaning the Bulldogs won the game in five innings.
 
Minnesota Crookston was held hitless in game one.
 
In the circle, Sofia Gombos (Fr., P, Salinas, Calif.) went 3.0 innings, while giving up three runs on four hits, while striking out two Bulldog hitters. Kamryn Frisk (Sr., P/1B, Anchorage, AK) came in relief of Gombos and went 1.0 inning, while giving up seven runs, four of which were earned on nine hits.
 
Game Two
In game two, the Bulldogs would score three runs in the first inning and two runs in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead.
 
Dana Zarn (So., IF, Winnipeg, Manitoba) would give the Golden Eagles their first run of the day, hitting the ball deep over the left field fence, to cut the lead to 5-1.
 
The Bulldogs would then score four runs in the bottom of the fifth, making it a 9-1 game, ending the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.
 
The Golden Eagles collected four hits in game two, highlighted by a two-hit game from Hannah Macias (Jr., OF, West Covina, Calif.). Zarn and Shaelyn Grant (Fr., C/OF, Grand Junction, Colo.) collected one hit apiece,
 
In the circle, Gombos also got the nod in game two. The freshman went 4.0 innings, giving up nine earned runs on 10 Bulldog hits. Gombos struck out one hitter.
 
What's Next
Minnesota Crookston will be back on the road this weekend, as they travel to MSU Moorhead and Northern State for a pair of doubleheaders. The DH with the Dragons is set for 1 p.m., on Saturday, while the doubleheader with the Wolves is set for a 12 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.
