Golden Bears Hold Off Late Golden Eagle Rally in Game Two to Earn Sweep

Crookston, Minn. – The Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul used big innings in the first game to run-rule Minnesota Crookston, 11-3 and would hold off a furious Golden Eagle rally to win game two, 13-8, to sweep the Saturday doubleheader in Crookston.

The Golden Eagles fall to 8-26 overall and 4-16 in NSIC play.

Game One
Rachel Jones (Fr., UT, Fort Collins, Colo.) would get the Golden Eagles off to a fast start, blasting an opposite field home run for her second of the season and a 1-0 Golden Eagle lead.

The theme of the day for the Golden Bears would be two out hitting. CSP would score all 11 runs in game one with two outs, including taking the lead for good with a three-run top half of the third inning.

The Golden Bears would then score five runs in the top half of the fourth inning to bust the game open, making it an 8-1 game.

The Golden Eagles would score two runs in the bottom half of the fourth, highlighted by Sarah Velasquez (Fr., OF, Chino, Calif.) and her RBI groundout.

CSP would add three runs in the top of the fifth inning and hold the Golden Eagles to run-rule the Golden Eagles in game one, 11-3.

Alina Avalos (So., P/1B, Riverside, Calif.) would lead the way with two hits on the day, while Cassie Querry (Sr., C, Cassville, Pa.), Dana Zarn (So., UT, Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Jones each collected a hit.

In the circle, Katie Humhej (Sr., P, Surrey, British Columbia) picked up the loss, giving up six runs, just three of which were earned, while striking out six.

Game Two
In game two, the Golden Bears would come out swinging. CSP would score the game's first eight runs, highlighted by an Amanda Parsons two-run home run over the left field fence.

Minnesota Crookston would not go down without a fight. Avalos would hit her third home run of the season, this time a three-run blast to cut the lead to 8-3. Zarn would follow that with a solo shot of her own, making it 8-4.

The Golden Bears would then answer with four of their own, making it a 12-4 game heading into the bottom of the fifth.

The Golden Eagles would load the bases with no one out and would use that threat and score four runs, highlighted by a Hailey Hatfield (Fr., UT, Olathe, Kan.) single down the left field line.

CSP would add an insurance run to make it 13-8, which would be the final score.

Avalos and Zarn would each collect two hits in game two, to lead the Golden Eagles, who had eight team hits on the day. Minnesota Crookston left five runners on base.

Sofia Gombos (Fr., P, Salinas, Calif.) picked up the loss on the day, getting just one out and allowing four runs on three hits. Darian Pancirov (Sr., 1B, Las Vegas, Nev.) was unreal in belief, giving up just one hit and one run in relief.
