Mavericks Pitching Silences Golden Eagles in Sunday Sweep

Crookston, Minn. – On a cold, blustery day in Crookston, the Mavericks of Minnesota State and their pitching staff held the Golden Eagles to zero runs in both games to earn the sweep on the day. The Mavericks won both games by a score of 5-0 and 8-0.

The Golden Eagles fall to 8-28 on the season and 4-18 in the NSIC.

Game One
The Mavericks would strike first early on in the first inning on a one out single from Hannah McCarville and Hailey Forshee sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 heading into the bottom of the first.

From that point on, it would be a pitching duel between Katie Humhej (Sr., P, Surrey, British Columbia) and Mackenzie Ward.

There would be no runners crossing home plate from the second through the fifth innings. Jordan Peterson (R-Jr., UT, Lakeville, Minn.) would get a leadoff double in the bottom of the fourth, but would stay put at second for the Golden Eagles.

The Mavericks would tack on two in the sixth inning and one in the seventh inning to win the game, 5-0.

The Golden Eagles collected three hits on the day, with two coming off the bat of Peterson and one from Cassie Querry (Sr., C/3B, Cassville, Pa.).

Humhej was really good again for the Golden Eagles, giving up five runs, three of which were earned on 10 hits, while striking out three.

Game Two
Much like the first game, the Mavericks would score in the top half of the first inning following a Sydney Nielsen RBI double.

The Mavericks would score early and often, scoring four in the second and one more in the third off of Golden Eagles starter Sofia Gombos (Fr., P, Salinas, Calif.).

The Mavs would score two more in the top half of the seventh to make it an 8-0 game.

The Golden Eagles would threaten in the seventh, but were unable to scrape a run across in the final frame.

The Golden Eagles had five hits, with one apiece coming from Dana Zarn (So., SS/2B, Winnipeg, Manitoba), Rachel Jones (Fr., UT, Fort Collins, Colo.), Alina Avalos (So., P/1B, Riverside, Calif.), Shaelyn Grant (Fr., C/OF, Grand Junction, Colo.) and Sarah Velasquez (Fr., OF, Chino, Calif.).

Gombos picked up the loss on the day, going 6.1 innings on the day, while allowing eight runs on 12 hits, while striking out three.

What's Next
The Golden Eagles will be on the road next weekend for a pair of doubleheaders at Wayne State College on Saturday and Augustana on Sunday. First pitch both days is set for noon.
