Winona, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston softball team wrapped up their weekend road trip with a doubleheader at Winona State.
The Warriors used strong pitching and timely hitting and held the Golden Eagles to just one run in two games, sweeping the doubleheader, winning 5-0 and 7-1.
The Golden Eagles fall to 7-23 (3-13 NSIC) on the season.
Game One
In game one, the Warriors got on the sticks early on in the bottom of the first inning, scoring four runs.
Abby Hlas homered on a 2-0 pitch for the first run of the lead of the game at 1-0. The Warriors would score three more times in the bottom of the first, capped off by an Ann Smolenski two-out double, to make it 4-0, WSU.
The Warriors would score once more in the bottom of the third.
That 5-0 lead would be more than enough for the Warriors, who would shutout the Golden Eagles for the game one victory.
The Golden Eagles collected four hits on the day, including a two-hit performance from
Dana Zarn (So., UT, Winnipeg, Manitoba) and one hit apiece from
Rachel Jones (Fr., SS, Fort Collins, Colo.) and
Jordan Peterson (R-Jr., UT, Lakeville, Minn.). The Golden Eagles left six runners on base.
Sofia Gombos (Fr., P, Salinas, Calif.) was solid in the circle for the maroon and gold, going the distance, while giving up five runs on nine hits, while striking out three. Gombos picked up the loss to fall to 3-10.
Game Two
Once again, the Warriors would strike early, putting up two runs in the bottom half of the first inning, highlighted by a Rylee Stout RBI double.
In the top half of the fourth, it would be Zarn who would provide the Golden Eagle offense a spark. Zarn hit her second home run of the season over the left field wall to cut the Warrior lead to 2-1.
The Warriors would score one run in the fifth and a pair of two-run home runs from Libby Neveau and Teaghan Amwoza to stretch the lead out to 7-1. That lead would be more than enough for the Warriors.
Katie Humhej (Sr., P, Surrey, British Columbia) was once again good in the circle for the Golden Eagles. Humhej went 5.0 innings, while giving up five runs on eight hits and struck out nine hitters for the second straight outing.
