Fayette, Iowa – Despite scoring one run in game one and falling to Upper Iowa, the Golden Eagles softball team was able to bounce back in game two, to earn the split with Upper Iowa on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles improve to 7-21 (3-11 NSIC) on the season.
Game One
For the most part, game one was a pitching duel between
Sofia Gombos (Fr., P, Salinas, Calif.) and Abby McKay of the Peacocks.
The Golden Eagles were able to strike first in the top half of the fourth inning.
Alina Avalos (So., 1B/P, Riverside, Calif.) singled up the middle, driving in
Alyssa Stillman (So., 2B/SS, Hortonville, Wis.), to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
The Peacocks would tie things in the bottom half of the inning and then score three runs in the bottom half of the sixth to head into the final inning with a 4-1 lead.
The Peacocks would hold the Golden Eagles to earn the game one victory.
Avalos and
Jordan Peterson (R-Jr., UT, Lakeville, Minn.) earned the only two hits on the day for the Golden Eagles.
Gombos went five innings, while giving up eight hits and striking out one Peacock hitter.
Kamryn Frisk came on in relief.
Game Two
Game two would be the
Cassie Querry (Sr., C/3B, Cassville, Pa.) and
Katie Humhej (Sr., P, Surrey, British Columbia) show.
Querry accounted for all three runs, driving in three, including a two-run home run in the top half of the fourth inning.
Humhej struck out nine hitters, while giving up just six hits and going the distance to pick up her fourth win on the season.
Offensively, Minnesota Crookston had 11 hits, including two each from Peterson, Querry,
Dana Zarn (So., UT, Winnipeg, Manitoba) and
Sarah Velasquez (Fr., OF, Chino, Calif.). The Golden Eagles left 11 runners on base.
What's Next
Minnesota Crookston is back in action tomorrow afternoon for a pair with Winona State. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
