CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston team, ranked No. 20 on the season, used four third period goals to take down No. 10 University of Jamestown 6-3 Friday, March 12 at the Crookston Sports Center.
Tyler Zahradka (Fr., F, Grand Forks, N.D.) had an outstanding performance as he showed off his speed all night, scoring two goals and adding three assists for UMN Crookston. The victory was perhaps the biggest for the Golden Eagles in their first season back on the ice.
UMN Crookston moves to 5-7 on the season, while Jamestown falls to 11-15-2 with Friday's loss. The Golden Eagles are 2-1 on the season against the Jimmies.
The Golden Eagles had 47 shots on goal compared to 30 for the Jimmies. UMN Crookston was 1-of-4 on power plays for the game, while Jamestown was 1-of-6. Jamestown had six penalties for 20 minutes, while Minnesota Crookston had seven penalties for 14 minutes.
Minnesota Crookston and Jamestown skated to a 0-0 tie in the first period. UMN Crookston had 20 shots on goal to 10 for the Jimmies. The Golden Eagles had several solid chances, but weren't able to get on the scoreboard in the first period.
Jamestown lifted the lid on the goal as Connor Rollo scored a power-play goal off assists from Braeden Thomas and Christian Jarmusz. Minnesota Crookston evened the slate 1-1 at the 11:01 mark of the second period as
Brandon Boetcher (So., F, Crookston, Minn.) found the back of the net off a great assist from Zahradka. The Jimmies went up 2-1 at the 13:18 mark when Joshua Hoffman scored off a Graham Day assist. Minnesota Crookston was able to tie up the game 2-2 at the 15:51 mark when
Tristan Morneault (Fr., F, Dieppe, New Brunswick) put away an outstanding pass from the boards from
Casey Kallock (Jr., D, East Grand Forks, Minn.).
Austin Ryba (Fr., F, Thief River Falls, Minn.) picked up the second assist. The Jimmies ended the stanza with a goal from Jarmusz off a Thomas assist at the 18:04 mark to go ahead 3-2.
Minnesota Crookston came out of the locker room with great energy. The Golden Eagles knotted the game up 3-3 53 seconds into the third period as Zahradka found the back of the net off a Kallock assist. The Golden Eagles built on their momentum at the 4:55 mark of the third period as
Cam Olstad (So., F, Grand Forks, N.D.) scored the power-play tally off assists from
Josh Nelson (Fr., D, East Grand Forks, Minn.) and Zahradka. Minnesota Crookston kept their streak going at the 6:26 mark when
Brian Bekkala (Sr., F, Livonia, Mich.) scored off a great assist from Zahradka. Zahradka ended the game with his fifth point of the day as he scored off assists from Morneault and Olstad.
Zahradka led the way for the Golden Eagles with two goals and three assists. Zahradka now has 16 points on the season. Olstad had a goal and an assist. He now has 16 points on the season, as well. Kallock finished the day with two assists to continue to lead the team with 18 points. Morneault added a goal and an assist. He has 10 points for the season.
Jake Sumner had a strong day in goal. He put away 27 saves for the Golden Eagles and allowed three goals. Sumner currently has a 4.51 goals against average.
Jamestown was led by a goal and an assist from Jarmusz, while Thomas had two assists.
In net, Samuel Potter had 41 saves for the Jimmies and gave up six goals.
UMN Crookston wraps up the 2020-21 season Saturday, March 13 at Crookston Sports Center against the Jimmies at 3 p.m. The Golden Eagles are not eligible for the ACHA Division II playoffs as it is their first year back in ACHA Division II.
