Big Innings Doom Golden Eagles In Losses to Bulldogs

St. Cloud, Minn.—It was a late night for the Minnesota Crookston softball team, who traveled to the Husky Dome for four games on the weekend, starting with two against Truman State.

The Bulldogs used big innings in each game to sweep Minnesota Crookston on the day.

Minnesota Crookston falls to 0-4 on the season.
Game One
The Golden Eagles got off to a fast start in game one, jumping out to a 1-0 lead on a Jordan Peterson (Jr., UT, Lakeville, Minn.) double, driving in Dana Zarn (So., 3B, Winnipeg, Man.).

The Bulldogs were finally able to break through and score a run off of Katie Humehj (Sr., P, Surrey, British Columbia), scoring a run in the top of the fourth.

Truman State would then load the bases in the fifth inning. With two outs in the fifth, McKenzie West would hit the go-ahead grand slam, putting Truman State up 5-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Minnesota Crookston would chip away. The Golden Eagles would use two bases loaded walks and a fielder's choice to make it 5-4.

TSU would add a run in the top of the sixth, which would prove to be enough to knock off the Golden Eagles, 6-4.

Individually, Minnesota Crookston was led by Peterson's two hits on the day. The top three hitters in the Golden Eagle lineup, Zarn, Hailey Hatfield (Fr., UT, Olathe, Kan.) and Gabriella Blomdahl (So., OF, Duluth, Minn.) each collected a hit.

As a team, the Golden Eagles left 10 runners on base.

In the circle, Humehj picked up the loss, dropping to 0-2 on the season. The senior went 4.2 innings, giving up seven hits, while giving up five runs, all of which were earned. She also struck out six on the night.
Game Two
In game two, Truman State was able to jump out to an early lead, putting up a crooked number in the bottom half of the second inning, scoring three runs on five hits in the second frame.

Much like they did in game one on the day, Minnesota Crookston was able to fight back. It would start with a Cassie Querry (Sr., C/3B, Cassville, Pa.) walk with two outs in the inning. Shaelyn Grant (Fr., C/OF, Grand Junction, Colo.) collected her first career hit of her young career, putting two runners on with two outs. A Blomdahl single and a Bulldog error would cut the lead to just one, 3-2.

In the fifth inning, an Alina Avalos (So., 1B/P, Riverside, Calif.) single driving in Hatfield tied the game at three.

The Bulldogs would score four runs in the bottom half of the fifth, which would be enough to knock off the Golden Eagles, 7-3.

Minnesota Crookston would get six hits on the night, with six different hitters in the lineup collecting those hits. In the field, Minnesota Crookston would commit two errors.

In the circle, Sofia Gombos (Fr., P, Salinas, Calif.) went 4.2 innings, giving up seven runs, just three of which were earned, on ten hits, while striking out four.
