Minnesota Defeats Golden Eagles 4-1 in Series Opener

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston hockey team fell 4-1 to the University of Minnesota ACHA team Friday, November 19 at Crookston Sports Center in Crookston, Minn. The Golden Gophers scored four goals in the first two periods and had strong special teams killing off eight power plays as they won 4-1.

Minnesota moved to 6-0-1 (6-0-1 WCCHA) with Friday's win. They currently lead the Northwest Division of the WCCHA. The Golden Eagles have a 2-3-2 (1-2-2 WCCHA) mark. They are fourth in the WCCHA. Minnesota is currently ranked seventh in the ACHA Division II Central Region

The Golden Eagles were guided by the sixth goal of the season from Casey Kallock (Sr., D, Alvarado, Minn.). Logan Syrup (Fr., F, Park River, N.D.) chipped in his team-leading ninth assist, while Tyler Zahradka (So., F, Grand Forks, N.D.) added his third assist of the year.

In goal, Jared Aamold (Fr., G, Breckenridge, Minn.) played all 60 minutes and allowed four goals with 27 saves. UMN Crookston was 0-for-8 on the power play while Minnesota was 0-0. Both teams were aggressive Friday as Minnesota had nine penalties for 29 minutes and UMN Crookston had four penalties for 24 minutes.

Minnesota looked to goals from Shane Griffin, Tyler Oakland, Lucas Kiesow, and Jake Sternbach. Adam Weiner and Max Boll chipped in assists.

In goal, Zach Walker notched 43 saves and allowed one goal.

Minnesota got on the scoreboard 45 seconds into the game when Griffin got the puck off a steal and put one past Aamold to put the Golden Gophers up 1-0.

In the ninth minute of Friday's game, Oakland added a goal off a Weiner assist to put Minnesota up 2-0.

The Golden Gophers added a goal in the second stanza in the sixth minute when Kiesow scored off a Boll assist to put Minnesota up 3-0. Minnesota added a fourth goal as Sternbach scored off the steal to make it 4-0.

UMN Crookston had many opportunities Friday, but the puck wasn't going their way on several solid chances, including opportunities on eight power plays. The Golden Eagles were finally able to lift the lid on the goal as Kallock scored off assists from Syrup and Zahradka. UMN Crookston would look to chip in further to the deficit, but were unable to as they fell 4-1.

Minnesota Crookston will continue their series with Minnesota Saturday, November 20 at 2 p.m. at the Crookston Sports Center.
