Minnesota Crookston Volleyball Wins Set Against Marauders But Fall 3-1

BISMARCK, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball team won their first set in NSIC play but fell 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 25-19) to the University of Mary at McDowell Activity Center in Bismarck, N.D.

The Golden Eagles fell to 1-17 (0-13 NSIC) with Saturday's loss. UMary improved to 5-17 (2-11 NSIC) as they earned their second conference victory.

Minnesota Crookston was guided by Bailey Schaefer (Fr., Brandon, Minn.) with 11 kills. Lauren Wallace (R-Sr., Bloomington, Minn.) chipped in nine kills and hit .147 for the match. Natalie Koke (R-Jr., Caledonia, Wis.) finished with 29 assists, while UMN Crookston hit .102 as a team.

Defensively, Layne Whaley (Fr., Ashland, Neb.) had a strong game with 20 digs. On the block, Maria Jose Bustos Garcia (Sr., MH, Cartagena, Colombia.) led the way with one solo block and five block assists. Wallace had four block assists.

UMary was guided by 16 kills from Nehkyah Ellis. Bailey Harms finished with 13 kills and hit an impressive .667 for the match. Maddie Cooper added 10 kills. Kameron Selvig guided the hitters, as the setter had 44 assists helping the team to a .213 hitting percentage.

The Marauders finished with eight blocks led by four block assists from Emily Torborg. Defensively, Kaia Sueker had 17 digs, while Ellis had 13.

Minnesota Crookston had a late lead 21-20 in the first set but UMary took five of the final six points to win the frame 25-22.

In set two, the Golden Eagles closed to within 21-19 on an UMary service error, but the Marauders scored the final four points propelled by two kills from Cooper.

Minnesota Crookston responded with a 25-22 set three victory. The Golden Eagles went on a six-point rally lifted by kills from Wallace and Charlee Krieg (So., RS, Cavalier, N.D.). UMN Crookston took the set 25-22 on a crucial kill by Wallace.

UMary used a six-point rally led by two kills from Harms to put the Marauders up 22-13. The Golden Eagles closed within 24-19 led by a Mara Weisensel (So., MH, New Ulm, Minn.) kill. However, UMary took the set 25-19.

Minnesota Crookston will take on Bemidji State University Thursday, October 28 at 6 p.m. at Gary Senske Court at Lysaker Gymnasium.
