Crookston, Minn.—Minnesota Crookston held the high-powered offense from Southwest Minnesota State to just 53 points and 34 percent shooting from the field to earn their second win in a row.
To start the game off, Mustangs get the ball and throw it out of bounce and shoot, not making it. 12 gets rebound and mustangs get the ball back. From there, Sadie Stelter steals the ball and gets it to Sam Wall for 3 points, making SMSU up 3-0.
Kylie Post (So., G, Corcoran, Minn.) and
Bren Fox (Fr., C, Norwood Young America, Minn.) make shots for four points to get Crookston on the board 10-4.
Post puts numbers on the board as well, bringing the score 29-20. Sam Wall hits a 3 pointer assisted by Erin Baxter, again making it a close game 29-23.
The first half would end in favor of the Golden Eagles, leading by five at 35-30.
The second half would continue to be back and forth.
Madison Gehloff buried a 3 for SMSU, keeping the score close, 43-40.
Julia Peplinski responds and adds to U score and then scores again making Minnesota Crookston's lead 47-40. The Golden Eagles would lead 47-42 heading into the final stanza.
The Golden Eagles would extend their lead to 10, before a Mustangs' three cut the lead to seven.
The Mustangs would show pressure down the stretch, but it wouldn't be enough as the Golden Eagles showed enough composure down the stretch to defeat the Mustangs 64-53, their largest win of the season.
In her return from sickness, Fox led the way with 16 points, while
Julia Peplinski (So., F, Hustisford, Wis.) had 15 points and 13 rebounds, her second double-double on the season.
Mattea Vetsch (Fr., G, Devils Lake, N.D.) had 11 points.
Abby Guidinger (So., F, Waukesha, Wis.) and
Emma Carpenter (Fr., G, Eagan, Minn.) both had 5 rebounds.
UMC still managed to win by 11 even with 27 turnover compared to SMSU 18. However, the Golden Eagles had 34 points in the paint compared to SMSU's 14. Their rebounds were very even with UMC having 39 and SMSU having 34. UMC shot 36.5% from the field while SMSU shot 34.0%. UMC still won big with shooting 0/12 from 3 point line, but shot 81.8% from the free throw line.
Minnesota Crookston will look to continue their winning streak tomorrow afternoon against No. 15/18 Sioux Falls. Tip-off is set for 3:30 from Lysaker Gymnasium.
