Peplinski's Big Night and Guidinger's Double-Double Not Enough as Golden Eagles Fall in Heart-breaker to UMary

Crookston, Minn.—Cassie Askvig scored the go-ahead basket with 58 seconds left to give the University of Mary Marauders a 77-73 victory over the Golden Eagles inside of Lysaker Gymnasium on Friday Night.

With the win, the Marauders improve to 13-9 (7-6 NSIC), while the Golden Eagles fall to 2-15 (1-12 NSIC).

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a fast 4-0 start, after baskets from Emma Carpenter (Fr., G, Eagan, Minn.) and Julia Peplinski (So., F, Hustisford, Wis.).

The lead would get to seven after the first points of the night from Abby Guidinger (Jr., F, Waukesha, Wis.), stretched the lead to 9-2 early on in the first quarter.

The Marauders would tie things at 13, but Mattea Vetsch (Fr., G, Devils Lake, N.D.) nailed her first of two 3-point field goals from the left wing to regain the Golden Eagle lead.

The Golden Eagles would lead 21-19 after the first stanza.

The second quarter would go back and forth, but a Carpenter three, her first of two on the night, would kick start the Golden Eagles 11-6 run to end the second quarter, which was capped off by another Peplinski layup, which sent Minnesota Crookston into the halftime lead up by six at 42-36.

At the half, Minnesota Crookston had two in double-figures, led by Peplinski's 12, followed by Vetsch's 10 points. The Golden Eagles shot 58.1 percent from the field in the first half, their highest shooting output in any half this season. Minnesota Crookston also led in paint points, 26-14 in the first 20 minutes.

Once again in the third quarter, for every question the Marauders asked, it seemed like Minnesota Crookston had an answer for it. Mary Burke (R-Fr., F, Virginia, Minn.) scored nine second half points, including a corner three to extend the Golden Eagles lead to four at 51-47. Another mid-range shot from Burke would give the Golden Eagles their largest lead of the game at eight, late in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter would see the Golden Eagles lead stay in the six to eight point range and would be a 66-60 lead after Peplinski went 1-2 from the free throw line. Peplinski would foul out the very next possession, which turned out to be a turning point in the game.

Burke would make two free throws to give the Golden Eagles a three point lead with 2:08 left, but the Marauders would rely on their star Askvig down the stretch. The Minot, N.D. native made back-to-back layups to give UMary their first lead of the game, which would prove to be enough, as the Marauders escaped Crookston with a 77-73 victory.

The Golden Eagles had four in double-digits, led by Peplinski's 19 points and seven rebounds. Guidinger collected her first double-double of the season, finishing with 17 points and 10 rebounds, as well as a season-high 7 assists. Burke and Vetsch finished with 13 and 12, respectively. Carpenter had her best game of her young Golden Eagle career, finishing with 9 points, including two makes from behind the arc.

As a team, the Golden Eagles shot 46.7 percent from the field and outrebounded the Marauders, 43-32.

Minnesota Crookston will look to end their eight-game losing streak tomorrow afternoon against the Beavers of Minot State. Tip-off for Alumni Day is set for 3:30 p.m., inside Lysaker Gymnasium.
