CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team fell to Northern State University 78-64 Fri., Jan. 10 at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles were within four points at the half, but the Wolves went on a 30-17 run in the third quarter to upend Minnesota Crookston at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston, Minn.
The Golden Eagles fall to 2-11 (1-8 NSIC) with Friday's loss, while Northern State improves to 10-5 (6-2 NSIC).
Minnesota Crookston was paced by the play of
Kylie Post (So., G, Corcoran, Minn.), who put up 17 points on 6-of-9 from the field.
Abby Guidinger (Jr., G/F, Waukesha, Wis.) continued her strong play of late with 15 points on 6-of-10 from the field, and 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. Guidinger has scored in double figures in five of the last six games for Minnesota Crookston.
Mary Burke (R-Fr., F, Virginia, Minn.) added nine points for the Golden Eagles, while
Alyssa Peterson (Fr., G, Menahga, Minn.) and
Amber Schoenicke (Sr., F/C, Marshall, Wis.) each finished with six points.
Mattea Vetsch (Fr., G, Devils Lake, N.D.) led the squad with seven rebounds.
Minnesota Crookston hit 23-of-59 of their shots for 39.0 percent from the field. The Golden Eagles were 7-of-25 from beyond the arc for 28.0 percent. They struggled from the stripe, going just 11-of-21 for 52.4 percent.
Northern State was led by the play of Sara Tvedt in the post with 16 points and seven rebounds. Brianna Kusler added a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. The bench for the Wolves was strong on the night with 28 points paced by 11 points apiece from Joie Spier and Avery Terwilliger.
Northern State was on-fire from the field, shooting 27-of-48 for 56.3 percent. The Wolves struggled from beyond the arc though where they were just 4-of-14 for 28.6 percent. A big area Northern State set the pace was at the charity stripe, where they connected on 20-of-24 shots for 83.3 percent.
The Wolves won the battle on the glass 38-28, while the Golden Eagles won the offensive boards with 10 on the night.
Northern State ran out to a quick 8-2 lead following a Shariah Smith jumper. Minnesota Crookston would score six of the next 10 points as they trimmed the deficit to 12-8 as Post got into the paint for a pair.
The Wolves responded with a quick 4-0 run with a Lexi Wadsworth bucket to put Northern State into a 16-8 lead in the first quarter. Northern State would go into the quarter break with the 20-11 advantage on Minnesota Crookston.
A Jessi Marti free throw pushed the lead to 21-11 early in the second quarter. Minnesota Crookston has the response though as 6-0 run led by four points from Guidinger cut the lead to 21-16. Northern State responded with a 7-0 rally as they went up 28-16.
Minnesota Crooskton did not go away though as a Guidinger three spurred on a 10-0 run, as the Golden Eagles were right back in it at 28-26 with less than two minutes left in the second stanza. A lay-in from Kusler widened the gap to 30-26 going into the locker room.
Terwilliger got the Wolves off on the right foot with a trey right out of the gate. Minnesota Crookston responded with a bucket from Post to pull within 33-28. The Golden Eagles would cut the deficit to 35-31 later in the third quarter after Post drained a pair from the stripe.
Minnesota Crookston would remain in the fray mid-way through the third with a
Julia Peplinski (So., F/C, Hustisford, Wis.) hoop to bring the Golden Eagles within 37-34. Northern State had the counter punch with a 6-0 run as a Kusler bucket pushed the advantage to 43-34.
Minnesota Crookston did not fade into the abyss, as a 7-3 run led by a Peterson triple pulled the Golden Eagles to within 46-41. However, Northern State ended on a 14-2 run to go into a quarter break with a 60-43 lead. Minnesota Crookston did not score a bucket from the field in the final 3:56 of the third quarter.
Minnesota Crookston looked to get back within striking distance as a Burke three cut the lead to 63-47 in the fourth quarter. Northern State countered and pushed the lead out to 67-47 on a bucket from Tvedt. The Golden Eagles were able to slice away at the lead and pull within 14 on a Guidinger triple with 4:26 remaining in the game.
However, a quick run widened the gap back out to 75-55. The Golden Eagles closed the game on a 9-4 run as they fell 78-64 to the Wolves.
The Golden Eagles return to action with a 3:30 p.m. meeting with Minnesota State University Moorhead at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston, Minn.
